any 6.5 turbo guys out there
been doing a bunch of perf mods to mine and am real happy with the results.....wondering if there is anyone else out there doing stuff to theirs........doug
disclaimer......if your pulling 10000 or under and you do your homework you can have a reliable 6.5 that pulls well and gets great gas mileage for a third of the price of a new Dmax,PS or Dodge......and Ive heard ALL the jokes

I used to have a 6.2 in a 3500 crew cab long box dually. A friend of mine worked over at turbonetics and I am a diesel mechanic between the two of us we got er going pretty good. I installed a gear vendor overdrive unit as well and that let me take advantage of the power for all it was worth without swapping rearend gears .the gear vendor is also nie when pulling hills becuase it can used as a gear splitter for those times when somewhere between 2nd and 3rd would be perfect but you wind up locking her down in second to stop the hunting wich is horrible for a trans. Banks makes all kinds of stuff for he 6.5 and you can make them into rocket ships.if you realy want to have some fun you can install propane injection. you don have to buy the kit from Bullydog you can make youre own deal way cheaper if youre intersted let me know and i will give you the info. There is nothing like the scream of a diesel on propane and the smoke blowing black as cole out the tale pipe while you light the tires up. no one sees it coming .

Re: any 6.5 turbo guys out there
My last truck was a 6.5 that I sold with 245K miles on it. It wasn't the fastest up the hill, but I didn't have to drive a Dodge or a Ford. I have pictures of it pulling a Ford pulling another Ford and a toybox out of the sand at Glamis.
The one thing I have heard repeatedly with regards to hopping up the 6.5 is the bottom end is the weak link. Seems to me, and I could be wrong, but they run a cast crank from the factory. Also, as I recall, the heads have some weak links in between the valves and up around the valve guides.
As far as the big puff of black smoke and blowing people away, I love it. Nothing like a 14 second crew cab 4x4 Duramax on 285's. The fart can kids never see it coming.

hey Jordy if youre into fast diesels you should make the trip to the salt flatts i go every year. they have a few diesel classes including unlimited diesel. most guys run twin detroit 60 series on crack about 3500 HP each. the record right now is held by a truck called the pheonix at 247 and some change. its unreal to watch youve never seen so much coal black exhusat in youre life. let me know if you want to and we can meet up its not that far from you and its right on the nevada utah border so i stay on the nevada side and do the casino thing at night.

and yes the 6.5 bottom end is incredibly weak and so are the heads. the heads can be dealt with but not the bottom end. only real option is a custom billet crankshaft. I called Valescos and he quoted me like 9 grand for one so i said no thanks. I have grenanded 4 of them so far but thats actually pretty fun too. when they go they go big and the carnage makes for some good trophies.

That's funny you'd mention the salt flats and Detroit Diesels. One of the shop supervisors at my company worked on a team that was going for the unlimted diesel speed record. It may have been the Phoenix. I know there were some wicked 2 strokes running around out there for a while as well.
Nothing like Bendover Nevada, especially when you compare it to the East side of Bendover in Utah... I've been through there a few times.
BTW, I work for the Detroit Diesel/Allison dealer here in town. I flog my 1000 Series in my truck like a rented mule but have been assured that as long as my business card has the Allison logo on it, I'm covered under warranty. Can't beat a deal like that huh?

I havent seen a 71 or 92 series out there in awhile, not since the 60 series became a viable performance candidate. it took a few years for the guys to get her going after it first came out as with most things but ever since the racers swear by them. when I was 19 I had an 86 crew cab dually that I put a siver star 8-92 in it if i remeber it was the 315 horse, that thing was a blast but I couldnt keep a rear end in it. Every time I lit em up it would snap an axle shaft I think I went through atleast 50(I am a slow learner) It was one of the funnest trucks I ever owned though. Its cool to meet someone else in this chit most guys think i am insane.

you can get the gera vendor OD kit for like a grand new in the box. The tailshsft adapter is about another 150 or so 4x4 installations can get intersting. how long is your rear driveshaft? also you can not use the unti in 4 whell drive it only goes to the rear wheels.
