Duramax problem

2003 Duramax 6.6 3500 Chevrolet

I just finished a 4000 mile round trip and about 3600 miles into it I lost power on the interstate. The check engine light came on and I did a diag through Onstar. They reported a loss of fuel pressure. I drove at about 65mph for another hour until I reached my stop for the night, anything above that and it dropped power. After it sat for about thirty minutes the light went away it it drove fine until about 3900 miles. Then it acted the same way. Both times I was in a rain storm, but visual inspection did not show any water around the electronics. I did fill up with cheaper diesel at a truck stop just before the problem. I just purchased a new fuel filter and will get it on tomorrow. Has anyone experienced a simular problem, or does it sound like my fuel filter is clogged?? The truck has around 70xxx miles. I also noticed smoke coming from the exhaust as I come to a stop now, think maybe a fuel injector is also stuck open??

Thanks in advance for suggestions...

Sounds like a Fuel Pressure Regualor. Just had the FPR replaced in my 04 LLY.

when was the last time the filter was changed?

An injector not closing properly will also drop fuel pressure.

Mine was caused by the injectors. Fortunately warranty cover them.

I purchased the truck about six months ago and have put about 10 thousand miles on. I figured the filter would need to be changed anyways.

Are the injectors covered on the 100 thousand or just the 50 thousand mile warranty??

Re: Duramax problem

Fliter should be every 15K or so. As far as the engine, it should be under the 100k (I think) but you will have to check with your local dealer

Re: Duramax problem

I have an 03 Duramax with 75K. Lost power around 65K but still ran smooth withoout a load. Finally got it into the dealer and they said injectors. Covered under warrenty but still charged me a deductable of $100.00. Truck runs much better now but still seems slightly down from new. Another thing to check is the air filter. Fram makes a replacement filter that will collaps and choke the engine causing a loss of power. Your air filter should have at least three lines of glue on the inlet side. This keeps the filter element from folding over and choking the engine. Check all the simple things first (fuel filter) but sure sounds like injectors to me. I was told that the injectors can pass too much gas back the tank also causing low fuel rail pressure. Also watch your oil level. If it raises, thats a sign that the injectors are leaking and the fuel is going into the oil. 2004 and newwer this is supposed to be corrected so that if they leak, it does not go into the oil.

Good Luck!

Any other questions, PM me and I'll gladly share what I know. I just went thru the bad injector thing.

I dropped it off at the dealer this morning. They said it sounded like the injectors also. Yep $100 deductable.

About a year ago I got a letter saying if I was experencing a loss of power, or bad fuel econ., I could bring my truck in because they where having trouble with the injectors leaking so ask your dealer about a recall.

Re: Duramax problem

They are replacing all the injectors and an oil change just in case there is any diesel in the oil.
