Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
Last weekend at the SBI/APBA race and kilo runs in Washington, N.C., the Velocity VR1 not only won the Factory 1 race, it also set the new 425hp speed record at a two way average of 80.95 mph. The same boat held the record in 2002 for 500hp and again in 2004 for 525hp, proving you don't need a ventilated bottom to go fast.

Congrats again team F1-56!
FYI... that hull may have set the record last year with 525hp, but I have the hull that set the 2002 500hp record. The boat will still do 82 gps mph with a windshield, full cabin, half a tank of gas, a full cooler, and two people! |

Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
I am running a 27 Hydro 4 blade square ear that Mike Hall has massaged a bit. Planning is no issue at all.... especially with the K-planes down. At 3500 rpm I am right at 50mph.

Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
Thanks CAVelocity. I'm currently hitting the rev limiter at 5150 rpm with my Raylar upgraded 496, running a 28" Bravo 1 prop at 77.4 mph GPS. We're working on reprogramming the rev limiter for 5600 rpm. The 27" Hydro is what I have considered and I understand Hall's knows how to tweak the prop for a better holeshot. What's your top rpm when you're hitting 82?

Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
My rev limiter is set at 5600.... that prop tops out at a little over 5400 on my boat. I have tried several props... 28 Bravo Lab, 30 Bravo Lab, and a 27 Hydro round-ear non-lab. So far nothing beats the 27 Hydro. Good luck.
I have a friend that is interested in upgrading his 496 HO in a 290 SC... any advice? |
Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
I ordered a 27" Hydromotive Q-IV today and look forward to comparing it to the 28" Bravo. I expect I'll still be into the rev limiter but I'm interested in how the boat handles and my midrange efficiency. Should be able to run it the weekend after next. If I like it, I'll be interested in learning more about how you had yours modified.
The Raylar 525 HP upgrade is pretty straight forward, using a lot of stock externals like exhaust. I went the complicated route by upgrading to the 600 HP version which required forged pistons, H-beam rods, Bassett headers, and for dress-up purposes, I relocated the coils off the valve covers which required modifiying the wiring harness. Love the way it looks and runs. Just not getting the full potential yet. |
Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
CA, I will be testing a set of the new CMI's on a 496, 290 this weekend. I will post results, so you friend with the 290 will have something to work with.
|
Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
Thanks a lot guys.... he's got a set of CMI headers on order!
|
Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
Any results on the CMIs yet? I know several people who are waiting to hear how they work.

Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
He said that there is a nationwide backorder.... no big surprise. I will post more when he gets them.

Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
OK Boys...Was able to get a few runs in this evening. Picked up a good 4 mph so far in dead calm. Ran with my labbed 28 pitch Bravo 1 and bounced off 5150 a few times. Will be running a labbed 30 Bravo 1 tomorrow, but it may be a bit much. With some prop work, i think I can eeek 5-6 mph. Mid range to high end was the best. If you run without mufflers, it will be LOUD.

Re: Velocity VR1 Sets F-1 Record...Again!
That's pretty impressive for just an exhaust change, keep us posted.

Are you looking to sell them? What power was in your 280?I am in the process of having a 30 done at Halls. I think it might be a little too much wheel though.
|
Yes they are for sale, the 26 has a small crack in one of the blades that i've been told can be fixed but the blades are extremely thin. As for the power in my 280 it was a 502 MPI bored .030 w/ a lot of goodies , never dyno'd but my top end went up 600 rpm with the original 26 QIV. Jeff at hydromotive said I added at least 200 hp to gain that much so it was at least a solid 600. The 27's were on my 390 when I bought it and all I can say is that they are top end only, they weren't very good all around performance but one may work well on a single engine app. I'm switching to bigger propshafts this winter so I wont be using them .
|
91 with a 26@5700 in a 26??? You must of had 700-800 hp.
The Vr1 with a 525 has an 86+ mph kilo record with a 29 pitch. I have a big shaft so they wont fit. |
i was just offering some props for you to try or buy. Why are you questioning the performance of my previous boat. My 26 went 78.6 on GPS in factory trim in 1996 when some of you couldn't spell GPS. If you need verification on her performance after the modifications there are a lot of guys on the Chesapeake w/ Velocities who can back me up and one in Sanford Florida, Initials S.S.

How do i obtain Steve's approval? |
Steve is happy to see people have fun with his boats . He enjoys going fast and is serious about saftey . Has been available by phone to answer questions over the years about driving , set up and or construction of his product . Dosen't matter if you buy it new or used , he makes time for you . When you buy a Velocity , you become part of the (family ) group .
