Though I tend to agree with this statement, I would say it as the boat is trying to cover too many bases at once. The Burlwood dash panels for example are... well...too cruiser-like and IMHO, just out of place in appearance and theme to what is a hot-rod lineage.

i would say they tried to bring a little class to a hot rod, did it work not sure. i will wait to see it in person as for [ not surprising, considering the source ] my question is why is a beakboater over here busting our chops. like it or not it is different hell beakboats look so much alike i can't tell a 29 from a 35, oh wait a min. they are about the same size :evilb:

The question has been asked so I'll answer.

I owned a '93 26' (280 now  ) and a '97 320 for a total of 9 years I think, and certianly 6-700 hours of running. Pics have been posted before...search my username in this forum. Both boats treated me well in terms of structural longevity and held up well cosmetically, though they certianly received the very best in retentive care. I run the St. Lawrence and Eastern Lake Ontario. I certianly had both boats out in big conditions beyond thier design, and they always got me home. Not so much as a stress crack in either of them. A+ there.

As far as fit and finish quality, well...there were some shortcomings that annoyed me, but I paid and sold both for the right money...so in terms of cost of ownership I can't complain regardless.

Small builders suffer with turnover and even availability of workers, so build quality/consistency can be irregular at best.

So why don't I have one now?

#1 I wanted a 35 footer and there was no offering.

#2 As much as I really enjoyed the "fun factor" and capabilities of the pad bottom in certian conditions...you pay a price for it in ride quality a good portion of the time. I had had enough of the sacrifices.

#3 I wanted McLeod cockpit (Steve will NOT deal with them), more consistency in build/finish, excellent support from the builder after the sale, and a sizable known used market share on the other end. That seemed to spell FORMULA.

#4 The deal: I was sniffing around at 353's and came across the DEAL OF A LIFETIME on a loaded brand new boat. (Thanks Erickson Marine in Mn.) I considered it destiny, did it, and to this day I'm glad I did!
The Formula ownership experience has been...well...everything we've heard the Formula ownership experience is like, and then some. (Thanks to Darryl at Formula, Erickson, and our very own Robert Nelems...who himself is a pillar in the boat dealer community regardless of brand).

I'm hooked up with a quality product (not perfect, none of them are, I don't care what you pay for it) with known value holding and market share, excellent builder/dealer support, a great ride and features, bla, bla, bla...

No regrets about owning the Velocities or the Formula.

Bashing is bad etiquette here on the forum and without it the place stays friendly...
after all we all have the same disease! :D
Nuff said! :)

Revelocity 05-23-2006 02:08 PM

Re: 2006 Velocity 410 WOW!!

Truth be told, the boat was an amalgamation of different components (aka confused) by the nature of it being primarily a marketing platform for a number of marine suppliers "teaming" together. The accompanying press releases had almost a dozen companies being credited from the resin to the powertrain to the cabin materials. This was truly a collaborative design endeavor and I think it's fair to say that the result would have been more cohesive if it was a singular vision. Still - it's a very unique boat that draws attention as intended and it will be just the ticket for someone.

Rippem 05-23-2006 03:11 PM

Re: 2006 Velocity 410 WOW!!

I will say this...

It's notable and commendable that Steve does all kinds of "interesting" combos. ie: Ilmors, Hemi's, interior layouts, different building materials in and out, the 280 "no power" deal. ect, ect.

I think he's having "fun" building/selling boats and trying different things. I think his product often appeals to the "eclectic" boat buyer, and he's willing to do some crazy stuff if somebody wants it, or just to see if it appeals.

There is certianly nothing wrong with any of that! :)

Mr. Ragged, by your own admission you've owned several Velocity's...... were they not "REAL" boats??

Now that you own something better it's time to throw Velocity under the bus?

Have been lurking in this thread a while.

My 2 cents is that the project boat styling wise is disjointed (wood panels and a brass tap in the head??......yikes  ).

Having said that, I have been gathering information on the 41 looking at a possible one time big leap to the 40 foot range.

Question: Velocity lists the weight at 8500 pounds I think. With engines? Seems way too light.

I peeked at Mark L's at Hutchinson's in Alex Bay NY yesterday. That baby is BIG.

I am looking to go bigger and the speed and cabin room of the 41 caught my eye.

2 on the OSO listings that are not selling like hotcakes though  .

Re: 2006 Velocity 410 WOW!!

Why is my boat in this thread,HYMM.Yes I bought the boat from Peter/Ragged Edge.To get it where it is today,I have spent alot of money to get it set up properly,NO PUN INTENDED PETE,but it had several weak points which since have been corrected,Drives,Carbs, and a few other things.Since I purchased the boat I have found 10 MPH and the WOW factor is way up and I have still not been passed by a Fountain and plan to try and keep it that way.Pete there is not one thing on this boat that is the way it was when I purchased it from you 2 years ago,it has been de rigged and re rigged properly, also some factory issues were taken care of as well.I am not going to take any cheap shots at anyone because we all know that all boats have there plusses and minuses and at this time I am happy with my current situation unless I can fint the old Cal Custom 41 Velocity. Also there seems to be some concern about the paint on my boat,I own a body shop and it has also been altered since the puchase from Peter So that can be laid to rest I am tired of hearing about that.My boat Was purchased 2 years ago and the boat of today is powered differently, painted different ,on a different trailor, different speeds 10 MPH Faster and Reliable. Also the NAME has been Alterd to be different. The boat was given its name by a very special person and I just could not bring myself to totaly changing the Name in respect for that person,Pete you know what I mean.I love my Velocity and that is that. You put up a boat the same length and the same power I will be willing to bet who would come out on top, especially if the person knows how to run a boat.

Welcome to the Velocity forum! The 41 "Double Eagle" is a concept boat kind of like auto makers building concept cars. I t gives the manufacture a chance to show creativity, new technology etc. You display it to attract people to come look at your products. I started this thread because I thought the boat was unique I didn't mean for it to confuse anyone.

If you are looking for a boat in the 40 range the Velocity is the boat for you. I researched for almost a year before I bought my 390. I have a friend with a 38 Fountain and I seriously considered them. They are inexpensive and a million out there for sale. All it took was one ride and I've been hooked ever since. The quality, rigging, Paint, everything is excellent. Oh I forgot Faaassssttt. I like speed. These forums are fun and educational but just get a ride and judge for yourself!!

Re: 2006 Velocity 410 WOW!!

Anyone who saw that boat in Miami would have known exactly what it was: a boat-show concept boat. I didn't really like it, but Kim Stepp (very nice lady) was on the boat when we boarded so we didn't say much. But we understood what Velocity was doing, showcasing different stuff. It's nice to see a breath of fresh air, someone trying something different.

The 410 itself is breathtaking! I'd love to have one...

Wow I should have kept up with this thread a little better. Yes I thought that was what he was saying I just wanted to hear him say it. There are a lot of boat companies out there that build boats that I do not like, and that I think are ugly, but do a search and you will not find me bashing any of them. My first boat was a 22' Stingray. I loved it and to this day I still find myself telling stories about it. Was it the quailty of what I have now No but I sure had some great times in it. Maybe I should go to there web site and bash them. I don't think so.

Re: 2006 Velocity 410 WOW!!

Can someone please clue me in on all of this Fountain/Velocity animosity??? Did Reggie kick Steve's dog and take a box of ballpoints or something?? There's a V owner over here that owns a prop shop in Christmas (yes that's a town in FL). A buddy of mine (CC owner) was over there checking out some props, noticed the boat and brought me up about my Fountain. (he doesn't know much about these) So the guy, according to my friend gives him some lip about my boat and tells him to tell me to go buy a "real" boat and according to my friend, it wasn't friendly banter. So really, what's the deal??? I looked at a lot of boats not caring about names or anything. Just bought what I wanted, so I'm not here to bash, just ask about this Pittsburgh/Cleveland type rivalry here. I too had a 22' Stingray and got a few of those "get a real boat looks" from some, even as I passed them!!! :evilb: :evilb:

Ragged Edge,

And here I thought it was just an attack (really ball busting) on me from our earlier encounter in the Fountain Forum, but you do not discriminate. Ragged Edge you do like to stir the pot, which is entertaining. And, I was not that offended when you were busting my balls on the other thread in the Fountain Forum last month.

I have read some your Fountain thread posts regarding advice on a 35' Fountain, and you are knowledgeable, not that I agree with some of your contentions, but you do know Fountains. I have always liked the 35'/33' Fountain, if wasn't for the that model, and the 30' Velocity my father and I (or as you say my "Daddy"), would not have had any many boats to race on the weekends since the 80's.

I just found it amusing that you came to the Velocity Forum to start more Sh*t. Now that, to me is funny.
Just don't get people too mad, some people are not forgiving, or open-minded like me....my $.02

Re: 2006 Velocity 410 WOW!!

Perhaps we could steer back to the vessel in question?

From all that I have seen and read in the last 15 years or so both Velocity and Fountain both make a good product. Yes, different in design, volume of production, handling traits etc., but I have not ever heard of a reason to disparage either builder.

Everyone has their opinions, which is fair. If there are specific issues or beefs lets hear them. Otherwise the pot stirring is just that.

Although the concept 41 styling is not my taste, I think the 41 in general terms is a fantastic looking boat (I still have an old Thoroughbred brochure with the Karl Koster California 41 in it...............awesome).

2 questions (and sorry to nag).

# 1: I have a boat lift rated for 11,500 pounds. What is the realistic weight of a 41 with say 500's/Bravos including fuel?

#2 Recognizing the 41 (or 39 for that matter) is a big boat would the ride be any different than competing boats in Great Lakes conditions?

BTW how is the project on the (brand deleted so not to offend) ? Hope it's coming together for you and your Father.
And how about that deal with Stevemaman ? Looks like they saw him coming and greased up the old beak. Maybe you can shoot him some frebie legal tips.

RE,

I am a much more docile poster than I used to be, so no ****-stirring for me. Stevemaman - feel bad for him, but if I was spending that kind of money (or any money for that matter), I am getting in the car, or on a plane doing doing a in person inspection, leak test, survey, and sea trial with me on board, ect, to have an idea of what needs to be worked on, but hindsight is... Hopefully it will work out for both parties involved.

Back in the 80's my father had a hot-rod Magnum, and he had a friend who bought a 30' Velocity. The Velocity owner knew Dean Nickerson, so he had Nickerson build him a set of NA motors, and when that was all said and done, that boat ran great, and he knew how to drive it at 90+ mph.
So I was always impressed with the speed potential. As far as Styling, I am neutral. I prefer a lower-profile boat, after being a Magnum guy for 19 years, that would be understandable.

HYPER1 - what Velocity do you own? Are you at Lloyd's Creek on Sundays?

We used to (and will once the Phantom is done) go through the C&D, hang off Turkey Pt., look for boats to race, then go to Lloyds Creek and hang out. My father had a yellow 27' Magnum Sport, "the Hairy Canary."

Thanks for the offer on finding the parts, but we are good now. Just waiting on the arrival of the new exhaust, and silent choice y's. But I will keep that "good connections" offer fresh in mind, just in case. It might be a couple of more weeks before we hit the water, and then we probably will need a set of Mercury four blade 30" props, we have a set of 28" props.

What power does your 32' have? What speed? Just curious.. Hope to see you on the water sometime this summer. Thanks again.
