Arneson Drive on Velocity 22
I am thinking of putting an Arneson drive on my Velocity 22. Has anybody done this yet?

Re: Arneson Drive on Velocity 22
While I've heard that transmissions have been fitted into the 22' engine compartment - I would guess they came from the factory with a different gas tank location to allow the engine to mount more forward. I think retro fitting an arneson drive would be major science project - if even possible.

i m starting an install on a 280 next week, should be good.

Re: Arneson Drive on Velocity 22
Doesn't arneson make a bravo conversion kit that doesn't move the engine forward?

That's a lot of weight levered off the back of the hull. I also have a 22' (older one) and its lay up is very light so some transom reinforcement would be required. You'd also have to question the revised center of gravity of the hull and what impact that would have on handling. The extra lift of the Arneson may help the balance but then again the set-up just might not work. At minumum I'd talk to Steve Stepp before going too far on this. Also, I heard the Arneson (with inside tranny) worked well on the 26'. In any case, I hope the projects are successful!
Rick There is not that much of a difference in weight between the two and as you noted it would be beneficial to the cg of the boat. |
Re: Arneson Drive on Velocity 22
Is this a newer 22 or and vintage one? Do you have the drive?
It seems like big bucks to sink into a 22. If you're looking for the high X dimension you could pick a blackhawk...cheep. They had there issues but they were mostly related to heavy hulls. This would help with the weight issue. my 22 was pretty fast with a 400hp outboard and the prop even with pad. I'd love to see a 600hp small block with a high X level....Hold for dear life good luck with the project keep us posted on it. steve |
Re: Arneson Drive on Velocity 22
check out the little donzi w/ the arneson. That should be a gold mine of info on your project. That guy posts on OSO but i cannot think of his name. What about a pulse drive...much more friendly if you ask me, and they have several small single engine applications documented on their website.

Re: Arneson Drive on Velocity 22
It's an 88 that has had the stringers reworked. It has a 7.4L 330hp Merc. I may put an LS2 smallblock in. I am getting the drive used so i'm not too deep into it. As far as CG, It may move it a half inch back, but a 200lb pax will bring the CG foward again.
Rik. How much is a Bravo box? John |

John I worked on the original 22' that Steve put an Arneson in/on. I am also the one that got to fill in the transom for the SS/M 3 to replace it. DON'T DO IT!!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Arneson Drive, it just didn't work on the 22'er. In my time there, he never tried one again, I have no idea why. Why don't you call Velocity and talk to Steve personally? He's very approachable and a really nice person. Tell him Steve Bartus said to call him and I said "Hi" to him and family. Also tell him I said to quit that wussy golfing and get into a manly pursuit, like racing boats or something.  Call him, you can only benefit from it. |
I purchased a 1981 Carrera 21 ft. Elite about ten years ago with a bbc and an Arneson ASD6 drive. I'm a swimming pool contractor and had been working on Arneson pool cleaners for years so when the boat came up for sale I had to have it. I still have the boat and the boat has had several motors but the drive has never been apart. A great package and you get the Arneson rooster tail. Your project sounds great, good luck. Doug

If they, and I know they didn't, use our new ASD6 Kit the engine would have to be mounted too far forward for the CG of a small boat. The only issue with such a small boat is balance and the engine placement is where the problem is. I have 28' Velocity with the Arneson Kit and it hadles fine, docks easy, gets on plane easy and has good bow lift. 22 with to forward cg?? |

I do know that the engine hadn't been mounted too much more forward than the normal, because the hatch, bulkhead, gas tank and back seat hadn't been changed. (unless I'm forgetting that too???) I really don't think so. As I said in my post, call Steve Stepp and ask him. He'll answer all your questions. |
My Carrera does everything about as good as a boat can. Rik, you were in my boat with a 400 h.p. BBC about 10 years ago. My concern was it wasn't "fast" enough and Howard and yourself were kind enough to check the installation to determine if it was set up correctly. I was pretty green when it came to any performance boating. Howard stated that it needed more horsepower so I added a blower and the boat ran into the 90's. Like I stated , the motors have changed but the drive is built to last. Boating was sure easy and cheaper when the boats were smaller, now the Jaguar cat is another story. Doug

Rik, how about more info on your 280 with arneson drive. what engine/hp etc. What gains if any did you see and what is a typical price for this type of conversion?
Thanks, |
Velocity
I guess nobody has called Steve Stepp?

Thanks, 28' with a 1000-1200 hp engine They're trying to get it to the Desert Storm Poker Run this weekend. Short water test, gets on plane better than the Bravo customer says, easier to steer, and better acceleration. Ran up to 95 and no handling issues with great ride attitude he says. No issues docking. AI#7M Kit Running a Hering 5 blade propeller. Don't know the specifics on it but I think it is a 32P. Customer thinks its too small. Will know more after they tow for 13 hrs to get to Havasu. This customer has EXPLODED everything off the back of the boat prior to this. BMAX, IMCO, TEAGUE, MAX Machine, etc. Goal is 105-110. |
Sounds great Rik, keep us informed of its progress

Rik,
Is that a stock bottom 280? I thought i read somewhere that arnesons didn't work well on notched transoms. I would love to have one hanging off the back of my boat. (if cost werent an issue :D ) |

(if cost werent an issue :D ) First time in the water was yesterday, the customer did not mention making any changes, I never discussed the need for any changes. ?? How fast should this boat be? The customer said with a Bravo/derivative of such, the boat would hit a wall at about 90 and he could not get past this without the Bravo going bye bye. |
I own the 280 rik is talking about.
it is a stock bottom and still retains the notch transom.the install was pretty simple and i can t say enough about rik.evertime i had a question, or needed a part,it was there. performance is pretty awsome . the boat jumps on plane like a rocket. and so far the mid and up into mid 90 s is great. also the smooth water porpus is gone completly. I have not yet gone wide open only because this is an injected motor and did not have time to remap before my computer battery died. I did call steve , he said it would not work. But after every thing else failed , I took the chance. Just like you guys i heard all this stuff , and now after runnig the boat i will say it is all b.s. If i get time to get the mapping done by mid day fri, I ll be on my way to the desert storm. |
That is awesome. So did you use the bravo conversion arneson?
good luck at desert storm and get someone to take some pictures of your boat with the big rooster tail. then post em for us! |
