The 280 is only 26 feet long and then you add the swim platform,it is probably the best handling of the fleet and a good all around package for its size. The 29 is based on the VR1 bottom and is 29 foot long without the platform, the VR1 is a fast hull.

Actually the 290 measures at 28' 6" LOA including the molded in platform, which is a little larger than the bolt on one on the 26/280. Very little difference in real length, if any at all. The 290 is a much taller boat though, higher center of gravity, which is why the lower/cut down VR-1 and old 26/280 are better handling hulls, less tendenacy to chine walk. The taller boat gets you more cabin space but at the cost of some driveability/handling. IMO.

The VR-1 is also 350 lbs lighter than the 290 SC version, lower and lighter make it a little faster with the same power. It was aimed at the F-1 class racing crowd, lacking in cabin space/headroom was not a hot seller with the regular boaters, hence the invent of the puffed up Sport Cruiser version. Another case of that trying to be everything to everybody that has been discussed here in the GM's thread.

on the 29 they took some of the flair out of the sides ofthe boat if you look at the bow it is more stright up from the chine to the deck this does two things it make's the boat cut throught the air better (less wind drag) ad the running surfice is longer then the 280 as for handling i have a 280 with big power in it and i thank the 290 handles better Mr. Beams boat is very nice has all the toys in it even Air and with a 525 he is over 80 and runs like it is on a string

I'm aiming more for the 29. Anyone running one on Lake Michigan?? I'm most concered with ride quality. I currently own a 26 Powerquest which rides and handle very well (not fast).

We love our 290 Velocity. The boat runs a solid 82 mph with a p5x Hydro prop.Runs strong and straight no matter what conditions. No other 29 can match the overall fun factor of the 290.

What power do you have and what pitch Hydro are you running?
