22FT Regal Velocity vs. 22T Velocity
What are the real differences between these two boats...ie lay up, weight, performance etc?The Regal version has a small berth that I actually like, but I know the extra weight sacrifices speed.
|
It depends on the year. I know Steve Stepp actually produced the early Regal 22's in his factory. The flat deck 22' Velocity and Regal are pretty similar. Later Regals have a center dash cut out and recessed cabin floor where the early Velocity has a solid dash and floor locker. The early Velocity 22 had a very light lay-up. From what I've seen, later Regals were more conservative in the lay-up.
Let me know if you'd like to get together to compare first hand. Rick |
Mark,
did you find an older 22? |
Ah screw that! it's time for you to move up to a nice 32.
Hint, hint.... |

My old 1987 regal velocity 22 was the one with the cut out in the dash. The hull and deck were well built BUT the regal part is what I didn't like. The hull was not glassed to the deck and the deck didn't fit correctly on the boat(it needed grinding to flush fit right) All the holes regal drilled had latex caulk and were seeping. The back seat was never sealed and neither was the bottom of the floor(raw wood.) No reinforcement to the transom for the o/b and th deck was spider cracking every where there was a cleat or screw. The boat was built as cheap as they could of. It took a lot of hours to correct the problems, then it was a decent boat. Would look for a steve step boat next time. Just my opinion.

could someone tell me when steve stepp stopped making the velocity 22 before the regal corp took over. i see some are saying he built some of them for regal. what is the cutoff date and which are the good ones to look out for.

22' Velocity vs. Regal
I have heard similar opinions that Steve built some 22's for Regal. I have an 1986 solid dash boat with VMX HIN and a 1987 cut out dash with RGM HIN. The '86 needed complete floors and stringers and I found the mint '87 before I got too heavily invested in the '86. Both boats appear identical except for the cutout dash and floor opening for a cutty in the Regal boat. The Regal has a 735hp blower set up, runs 102MPH and has virtually NO stress cracks in hull or deck so I would say it is rock solid whether built by Steve or Regal. Some day I'll call or stop in to Sanford and get the real scoop.

I have a friend with a 23' Regal that broke appart just like my 24' Superboat did. The hull to deck joint split wide open because it was not glassed together.
I don't think that would happen to a boat built by Stepp. |
Unfortunately, we separated the deck from the hull during a race in 92 in our then new 26' Thoroughbred.
Just goes to show, you can break anything! |
Oach, that must have been a little scary.
The hull deck joint on both my buds 23' Regal and my 24' Superboat were only screwed together with wood screws that also held the rub rail on. I'm quite sure lots of boats are built this way but I do know my Velocity is not. |
ditto, my velocity is glassed (hull and deck) together.

So far as I know, all Stepp Velocities have the hull and deck glassed together, we had four of them and that's the way all were built.
We broke our boat in a rough race off of Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Our port side K-plane got stuck in the full down position and we went off the top of a a rather large wave into an even bigger hole where we came down with a massive thud on our starboard side. After we shook off the shock of the impact, I went forward to check for damage. Didn't see anything untoward except for a loose rubrail and didn't realise it was my weight that was holding the deck to the hull. We started off again and I noticed my feet were getting wet. I looked forward through the cabin and could see daylight. The separation went just about from the point of the bow back to the end of the cabin. We still finished the race and came second though. |
I had an 88 Regal 22. A lot of stringer work was done on it before I got it. There were no stress cracks in it. I traded it in on a 2010 Velocity 22 with a 525EFI. Velocity in Sanford has my old one for sale still. I watched them glass the deck to the hull on the 2010. You can buy my 2010 in about 20 years when Steve builds another one for me. I am curious to see what will be powering that boat.

I remember reading a little about your boat as it was being built. Looked real good. How dose it run with the 525.
Nevermind I just read your thread New 220 being built. Boat sounds awesome. Good luck with it. |
