Pat McPherson

Pat, are you up and running with your Velocity ??? :D

Pat McPherson 06-27-2008 08:36 AM

She's running on the garden hose.
First ride this Sunday or Monday.

Andy 06-27-2008 09:43 AM

Lucky dog!:D

Pat McPherson 06-30-2008 11:51 AM

I ran the boat Saturday and Sunday. The power steering pump was screaming so I did not push it too hard.
When I pulled her out yesterday I discovered a blown hose on the steering and the transom was black from the engine running real rich.
Two problems to solve this week so I can give her another try this coming long weekend.
She surely is a different animal vs. my last 2 boats…

Superbabi 06-30-2008 03:26 PM

Keep us posted Pat !!!

Will do G...
I dropped off one of the hydraulic lines to a fellow to make me up 4 new ones for the external steering. He's ordering the parts today and should have new lines for me Wednesday or Thursday.
I think the engine is going into knock mode and retarding the timing and causing the rich condition. I may have broken a wire or sensor removing or installing the engine.
I must say this boat handles totally different than any of the old school straight deep V boats I've had. The pad bottom has the boat riding much higher and flatter than I'm used to.

z.zuperboat 07-01-2008 08:47 AM

Pat flat can be a great thing. Less time on and off the throttle. With the pad I bet its fast. Good luck

I think the boat is going to be relatively fast with the modest power I have in her.
I’m expecting high 60s low 70s depending on the load. I did only one short burst, because of the screaming pump, and saw 67 or so at 4600rpm spinning a 26p B1. The power is down if the engine is going into knock mode.
There are 26ft/280 Velocitys out there running big numbers but it’s going to be a while before I’m comfortable enough to bolt in more power.
Thanks for the well wishes…

bulletbob 07-01-2008 01:18 PM

Take your time Pat. I have less than 20 hrs. on my 280 and have a ways to go before I am confident at WOT. Enjoy!

tripps 07-01-2008 09:15 PM

Thanks, I may take you up on that.
As soon as I get the bugs worked out and get a little seat time, I'll start playing with props.

Pat.....It's about time. lol We need to see pic's. Congrats

VelocityRick 07-07-2008 01:38 PM

Oops how that get uploaded. Hahah

Pat McPherson 07-07-2008 01:45 PM

Well guys I did find some time to work on the boat over the long weekend, but no time for a test ride.
New hydraulic lines for the steering installed, Oil temp gauge hooked up, water press gauge hooked up, 2nd battery rewired to starboard side, checked wiring to knock control.
I need to bleed the steering check the timing and give the black transom a cleaning and then back on the water.

Hey Rick,
There are two red wires that are dangling at the battery switch. Do you know what they are/where for?
I don't want to just blindly hook them up...

VelocityRick 07-07-2008 01:56 PM

They went to the old stereo. I just never finished mounting the new battery stitch and connecting them to the new wires that I ran straight to the battery. There are a lot of wires that all ran to the starter which I never liked. Everything should be wired to a fused buss-bar. There are a lot of wires around the depth sounder too that I didn't like, all of which would of been a winter project if I had kept the boat.

Thanks Rick, I'll just tape over them.
I haven't yet decided if I'm going to leave the stereo wired directly to one battery or go to the switch; probably just battery 1.
I have the dash wired to battery 1 for now until I get the switch mounted so that you can reach through under the seat. I need to be able to open the hatch with the switch turned off.
I moved battery 2 over to the starboard so I could work around the engine a little easier.

Well Guys, I have used my boat a few times this summer.
6 to be exact...

This past Sunday and Monday we braved Tropical Storm Hanna for our annual Boyz only venture to Block Island...:evilb:

We had no idea what the water would be like after the storm so we started with a trip across the LI Sound to Claudio's in Green Port.
This was my first run in the open water and she ran great through the 2' wind blown chop and 4' rollers in the sound...:ernaehrung004:

A few more shots at Claudio's.
Sorry VRick, no hotties taken on Tim's wife's camera...:grinser010:

We reluctantly left Claudio's during the band's 2nd set in an attempt to make Block before sunset...:cool-smiley-027:
We had an absolutely great ocean ride in 2' chop and 6' following rollers. If they had been in our face then, well...:party-smiley-004:
The Great Salt Pond was a welcome sight for sure...:drink:

Pat McPherson 09-10-2008 09:41 AM

As for performance numbers:
No triple digit numbers to report here...:p
4 fellows, full fuel, full cooler, and some gear.
Cruising at 3500rpm with neutral trim we saw about 45mph.
At WOT and trimmed up, 63mph at 4600rpm.
We ran about 110 miles round trip and burned about 50gal...

I will say that this boat makes me feel a lot more safe in the open water vs. my 24' Superboat. It should though as it is 2-1/2ft longer, 1ft wider, 1500lbs heavier, and has lots more free board. This boat feels more solid when you land. She’s not the Hot Rod the Super was, but I’m a little more conservative these days so that’s OK too.
I'm still learning how to run the boat, but I can say that VRick was right that she does run nicer in the rough if you push the throttle a little more than you might think...

tripps 09-10-2008 08:16 PM

Pat,i got your messages when i was in montauk, and after that week there I was not gonna do it again:eek: your boat gets ALOT better mileage than mine, the corsa that is. tripps

Sick Stinger 09-11-2008 07:02 AM

Pat i wish i knew you were still going to head up i would have met you on the island. ANyway i hear your were the guy to ttalk about to run the Ct. River in october. I hope im ready by then!!! come on already right?. Anyway glad to see its buring fuel. ill talk to you soon.
-Mike

Pat McPherson 09-11-2008 07:19 AM

On Sunday we left for Claudio's around noon after the small craft advisories were lifted in LI Sound at 11am.
The forecast for Block Island Sound at that point was 20-25mph winds and 6 to 9 footers. Obviously it laid down a lot by 6pm. We really did not think we would be going to Block when the day started. We got lucky with the following seas.
Monday was vary calm for the return trip...

Hi Eric,
One of these years you and Mike (Zuperboat) will make the run with us.

Hi Mike,
Yes, I plan to be at the CT River Run. I'm not sure if I'll be able to run my boat though. If not, I'll be riding in my buddy's Fountain.
You've got time, don't rush you project

Sick Stinger 09-11-2008 08:07 AM

How long its taken me so far believe me no rush here. Glad you made it to block good stuff man.
-Mike

Superbabi 09-11-2008 04:37 PM

hey pat...
that sounds like my switch from the condor to the sutphen. though the similarly designed condor was a slug to your superboat due to its small block/ alpha combo...
i'll second the safety thing, and i cruise the same way, same throttle deal...but i can do block and back (135 miles) on 50-60 with twins!:ernaehrung004:

hope to run with you on the CT River run, interested in shooting over to BPT on the 20th to see the sights during glen cove run, pm me..i've got room...

Pat McPherson 09-12-2008 07:22 AM

No Whipple G., my 502 is just about done. I'll be building/rebuilding something this winter.

Gary H, Claudio's was actually rocking. Mostly bikes, but the docks did fill up later in the day.
Tuesday the 23rd Anthony is planning to come down to the River if you are free.

CT River Run?
http://forums.screamandfly.com/forum...d.php?t=167162
I marked my calendar for the 18th, but?

Chris, for obvious reasons, I run a little differently these days. I don't think my tach cracked 3600rpm the whole trip to Block and back. It was only coming back to the River from the Pavilion on Monday that I opened her up. My passengers like riding with me better too.
Thanks for the offer, but my sister Lori is getting married on the 20th.

VelocityRick 09-12-2008 08:51 AM

Awesome!! Congrats Pat. Don't worry about the hotties. I'm just glad to see you on the water.

ChristianGott 09-12-2008 06:29 PM

hey pat..
i'm with ya...
have fun on the 20th, we'll post pics.

Hi Gary,
I've got a parent teacher thing on Tuesday the 23rd from what the wife tells me...
How about Monday the 22nd?
I can get out of work at 3:30 and be ready by 4:15-4:30.
I'll call you and Anthony this week.

Nothing crazy G; probably between 400 and 500HP.
I have learned the hard way that stock power just about always gets you home.
$$ will also be a factor...
