(some) Velocity History

Here's some pics from 1982 Cypress Gardens Powerboat Mag. Test of my Factory Demo Velocity 22/ Family fun boat, with 200 Merc. Great Family runabout with tons of room & storage. The 22 was perfect for our day outings. Bob Nordskog tested it & told me he loved it.

(some Mo) Velocity History

This is the 1'st catalog for the (then) new Vel. 22. Catalog designed by myself & shot by My old Pal Pete Smyth in the Loxahatchee River in '83, near my home. Great day- some nice photos. Pete was the best. I'll post the other side, with description & specs. this was a single sheet- front & back. Thought some of you may enjoy some of this archival stuff from Velocity's early days, when we were in the original old rickety Pompano shop.

(even Mo) Velocity History

OK Velocophites, this is the back of the (then) new Vel. 22's catalog sheet. Some pretty interesting stuff here- Photo of the late great Walt Beasley with the checkered after winning his 1'st ever offshore race, in the 1'st 22 ever raced, 1'st "black" hull from Vel. (forbidden stuff). Walt & Tabu also set a Kilo record with this the very 1'st hull pulled from that fresh mold in the old Pompano shop. Lotsa "firsts" in that photo. Velocity was then a very young struggling shop with fresh ideas. The 22' was a revenue generator - easier to build/rig & deliver, and the few dealers we had loved them. Anyone remember Walt & Joan? Remember his featherweight 30 footer Scarlet O'Hara's with the Bamboo reinforcement? I'll post pics soon. (if anyone's interested)

Wolfe, I have a question for ya... I worked a summer at the Mopar parts depot that used to be here in Orlando, and while I was there I met a guy that used to work at the Regal Plant, which for those who don't know is also here in Orlando, over by the airport.

Anyway, he worked there during the time that Regal built the Velocity. He had told me a couple of interesting tidbits that I have never been able to confirm or deny. He claimed that all or most of the "Regal" 30's were built at the same time and stamped as they were sold between 87 & 89. He had also said, that because of the pending lawsuit between Regal & Steve, that the 30's that were sold during that time were not to have the Regal name anywhere on the boat.

As I said, never confirmed or denied, but some interesting bits. (I do know that our 88' 30, did not have the Regal name on it.)

I left Velocity prior to the Regal deal, so I wouldn't know. At the time I was considering my own Legal Action against good old Steve, but alas, Uncle Sam beat me to it , I didn't wanna stand in that LONG line only to learn there was nothing left. Time heals, Life is awesome & Steve's ........well....."Steve."
I saw him at the Chicago Boat Show shortly after the Regal deal. We were "cordial." He didn't seem pleased being in the Regal booth.

Yes, I put that ad together. Must have a copy in a file somewhere. The 3 boats pictured- upper left was our sales demo triple 2.4 efi merc 30'. We played with that baby for about a year & sold it to a hay hauler who made the news that same night, chased by a chopper up the FL coast while tossing odd looking square packages over the side(?).
Upper Rt. the 1'st 38 from the mold we made from Big Red. I sold it to Ted Elias from Boca. The 22' was mine & the driver in this pic is Bob Nordskog during his review/test for his magazine, taken at Cypress gardens. I took that shot of Steve (cool do Steve) posing in Big Red. Mo Memories, thanks for posting the old ad.

Pretty sure it refered to the 100 MPH Kilo record.

I bought a 1987 Velocity 22 center console to use for the summer since my Sutphen is taking so long to put back together. I spent last week boating around Annapolis with my 7 year old son. The power is the original 200 Black Max. It gets up and goes pretty good and is a perfect picnic/ski/tubing boat.

I'm keeping it.

This is a picture anchored at Hart/Miller Island where we camped last Thursday.

I currently have a fleet of canoes (3), a 16' skiff & a 26' Center console, oh and a "peddle" boat. I'm thinking of "cupping" the paddles on that baby for more "bow lift."

You are correct Sir. We had just set the record & Stepp wanted to publicize it. This was quite a feat for the day. The big names like Cig., Scarab, etc. had yet to approach that number, even with tons more HP than we used for this run.
I realize 100+mph ain't much today, but it was an attention grabber back in those ancient times. When we featured that number, as an addition to our logo in our little Miami Boat Show booth, it generated quite a stir among the other better known marks. "Motor Mouth" (RF) had steam coming from his Elvis hair do, which gave Steve lot's of pleasure. Utilizing D. Allison's designs we were achieving numbers unheard of for V bottom heavy offshore craft, and we were on top until those "pesky" new fangled Cat bottoms popped up like mushrooms in our yards after a spring rain. But that's another (long, but interesting) story for another time & forum.

What year was the BFI 38 Velocity built?

EXCESS ENERGY 08-29-2008 01:30 PM

Natda1 ownes that boat now, old BFI . I think it is stamped in the hull as a 1987. That was and still is a bad ass ride. The boat is a little on the heavy side as for todays standards but it loves rough water. Been in and drove it many times and never disappointed. BOB

notda1 08-29-2008 09:08 PM

Measures 39ft 10in is fun to drive in ruff water . I still miss driving my old 30 . I have been thinking about a newer 39 to liven things up . I have put a lot into this one .Would be willing to sell with or with out motors if I could get a fair price ? Put new staggard 900hp motors , Stelling exhust ,Bam 1500 transmissions and rebuilt the drives .Anyone interested let me know it is an amazing ride :cool-smiley-011:

In this history lesson how come the fact that Steve was the first one to dam off a 41 foot mold and make a 32 foot boat hjas not been mentioned ,and Ray I am looking,PM me with your contact info.I made an offer on a boat today but I have not finalized anything.Viscous get ready.:drink:

velocity22 08-31-2008 12:03 PM

Jay Wolfe, I owned a 22' 1985 for twenty years up till 2006 when I finally sold it. I have a copy of the Feb 1985 powerboat magazine performance test. The boat in the test had a 200hp merc on it and ran 66mph. I enjoyed reading your comments called "following in Steve's steps" you were right on the money with your comments. Bob Nordskog missed the boat when he said "forget the Hydraulic transom plate it's just not necessary". You can control the handling much better with not only the hydraulic lift but also a 6" setback plate. Frank
