New Velocity Owner
:flag:Just wanted to say Hi to every one, Just bought a 1994 26ft thoroughbred in Sept. Had it out 6 times and absolutely love it......Need a lot more time to get used to it but so far I,m amazed at how well the boat handles..It has a 540bulldog with a Weiand 256 blower, 30p prop. Third time out I ran out of gas with a 1/4 tank showing ugh....... didn;t realize the gauge was that far off,........that won't happen again. Mid 70's it chine walks alittle, Kenny at the factory said to countersteer slightly back and forth to compensate. Is this common with any of your Velocitys ? Anyway hope to learn alot from you guys ! How do you insert pics ?

Welcome to the family!!!!!

When I first got my boat I had to learn how to drive it. Velocity's are a drivers boat, which is a good thing. Who wants to sleep at the wheel and just push the throttle forward? Half the fun is driving the boat!
You need to practice a bunch of wide open runs until you get the hang of it. You will figure it out and will never have a problem again. On mine, in the mid 70's it will want to roll to the left (port) then it falls off the pad and you have to get out of the throttle. When you feel that happening all you have to do is give the steering wheel a little bump to the right and that will keep it on the pad . After you master that, all you have to do is play with the trim and tabs untill you find that sweet spot that makes the boat just fly. Take your time, practice, and you will love it once you get it down. |
Sounds good, can't wait till next boating season to get plenty of practise in. The previous owner said he never used the trim tabs only the drive trim. I haven't used them yet either aren't they more for really rough conditions ? The lakes I boat in stay pretty calm maybe a light chop or so.........
|
Where in MI are you. I have family in TC and Arcadia. If you head out the big lake you'll like the tabs. Beautiful water I'm envious.
|
I'm in T.C. It's awesome boating for sure. Having a ski boat for 20+ years I'm really having a blast in something that goes this fast.......... is there a way to post pictures from your computer or do you upload from a diff. source like photo bucket etc ????
|
Unless you are a paying member you can't post pictures directly . But photo bucket will work.
|
I am also a new Velocity owner. Havent had as much seat time as you but its been Hella fun so far. Congrats on your floater. :coolcowboy:

sparkiie124 What kind of power do you have ?

Hey I figured out how to do pictures Check it out .....................http://http://imgur.com/7B2GQ <a hre...mgur.com/oqlKC

http://http://imgur.com/7B2GQ NOT SURE IF IT WORKED
|
@ Speedwad...496ho with B1X. The prop had been run through rocks/gravel I think. couldnt get it past about 62 by the speedo and only about 46-48 rpm. Just got it back from BBLADES. I wasnt sure if was repairable but I now get to stare at this work of art for the winter. Cant wait to test in the spring.

Speedwad and Sparkie,
Welcome to the family, great bunch of folks here to help with questions. Good luck, be safe, and most importantly ENJOY! Rick |
Congrats! On my 290, I trim the drive out past vertical before I hit 70 and it keeps the chine walk away...Also on my fuel, I subtract 1/4 tank from the fuel gage reading and then its close (example 3/4 gage=1/2 tank)

It sounds like a lot of boats have inaccurate fuel gauge readings. The boat REALLY ran great just before I ran out,....Then I was allitle pissed so I put in 75 galons in right after and wow what a difference in having all that weight.... so now on the smaller lakes I'll keep it around 1/2 tank or so ......I'll try the trimming tip you suggessted to bad this boating season is over . At some point in the future I will be looking for a newer Velocity, on the length though my 26 is 26 without the swim platform the new 26 looks like it includes the swim platform so is the newer 26 accually a 24 ?
|
Yep, 24'3" to be exact. Kind of stupid to call it a 26. I wish they just called it what it is. They must think people are stupid:drink:
|
Reved up, How is your's set up ? power, prop, add ons etc. Mine does not have a windshield and I thought I really needed one,... but after talking to Kenny at Velocity you still get blasted standing up,.... since I prefer standing I think I'll keep it without. Also it's really easy to slide onto the bow off the dash area.
|
Here are some pictures of my set up.
http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/v...e-them-28.html As far as the windshield goes. Velocity makes 2 different windsheilds. One is lower and one taller like mine. The lower one looks much better, but the taller one is more functional. Also has a very sturdy frame which is nice. Seeing your in Michigan, I think you would like a windsheild. Hard to talk or even see without one. Also protects from bugs, water spray and cool or rainy weather. |
Wow..... Your boat is seriously awesome...... So with the taller windshield the wind goes over your head while standing ? My 94 looks so dated compared to yours but it runs really good, I'm planning on redoing all the upholstery this winter to give it a newer look .......should suffice for a couple of years. How did you get the pictures in there? it asks for a URL when I try it, Thanks
|
Thanks, its been a fun project.
It depends how tall you are as far as the wind going over your head. I'm 6 ft and if I stand straight up it hits you in the face. If you put your feet forward a little and push your back into the bolster it is about the right height to go right over your head. Here's a link for posting pictures. http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/g...t-big-pic.html |
Thanks, I appreciate the feed back. I like the way it looks without a w/s but I may grow tired of the wind eventually. Has anyone had any experience with separate wind flaps like what Finneys fron Arizona is selling? http://i.imgur.com/1LuYJ.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/7B2GQ.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/0OuxR.jpg

I think the previous owner installed these trim tabs wrong , They are not flush with the bottom of the hull .......[IMG]http://i.imgur.com/dZVjF.jpg. Is this a problem??
|
|
I had a 93 t-bred velocity. Had a 509 250 B&M on it. Popped that and ran a 589 Blown wih a 10-71 intercooled. Around 1000 H.P. as for your tabs Ive seen them there before not saying it right or wrong but i like them on the out side . Also they should be moounted about and inch about the keel not even. Good luck with the boat

Thats sick power ! How did the boat handle with that much power. Speed ?
|
Handling wants to huge of an issue I did have the dual ram on the back. It ran great witht hat power 4800 3 psi of boost was 82. Swinging a bravo 32. Motor would turn 7200 at 8 psi. Would run low 100's. Just keep on the wheel and let itfly. Thats pretty much it but make sure to get some good seat time before running huge power. Wheel time is a big factor on these boats. The more seat you have the better and you can run the boat to full potential.

As to the tabs, I belive Steve Stepp recommends
mounting them as your picture shows. |
i kinda like the sound of this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfV1W...2&feature=plcpturn it up :evilb:

Mike that does sound sweet....... I did check with Kenny and he said Steve has set up tabs the way mine are. Said it handles higher speeds really well this way. That was good to hear.

MERRY CHRISTMAS VELOCITY COMRADS........Just got my blower back from the blower shop, bearings were worn out and the rotors scuffed up the blower housing. they did an awesome job it looks like new......they added teflon strips too. Also found out the chiller core was swelled closed so had to put in a new one. Not knowing for sure what happened ,... either it overheated or the previous owner didn't drain the intercooler and it froze. I'm really surprised it ran so well the few times I had it out. Good thing we found these issues early on. You really never know what your getting when you buy an older boat.
|
Question for you guys out there.... My boat tops out about 80mph with a 30p 4 blade merc prop,.... If I'm not interested in top speed only, what would be the down side to running a 32p to get a better crusing speed and turning the engine at less rpm's ...say 65mph and lower ? Would take off suffer?
|
Actually turning a bigger prop slower "generally" yields a faster top end. Accleration will be less. I wouldn't expect any issues out of the hole going up 2" in pitch. That being said, you always need to experiment with props to know whether you're happy or not.
|
You really should be running a prop that lets your boat reach it's full RPM range. Do not go up in pitch just to get lower RPMs at mid-range. Otherwise you are "lugging" the motor. In long term effects, your looking at mushrooming valves and premature engine wear. (kinda like being one gear to high all the time while driving your car) If you can switch to a 32 and still reach your full RPM range, then go for it. The best measure for knowing if your properly propped is what your top end is and if you reach that RPM level.

Thanks for the responses.......Then what I'll have to do is see if it will over rev with the 30P I only had it to 5000rpm once for a second then backed it down as I'm still getting used to the boat. It didn't feel topped out though. If it willl rev higher how far is safe past 5000 rpm ? What rpm do I want the boat ultimately to max out at ?......... Specs say 4800-5200 on a 540, does a blower make any difference?
