Exhaust question

I have an '88 Regal Velocity w/7.4 and Bravo. The exhaust exits through the side of the hull below the waterline.

I am wondering what the large fiberglass chambers are between the exhaust manifold and the hull. They are about 15" long and 12" in diameter. One on each side of the engine with 4" inlet and outlet. There is nothing inside of them except a partition with an eliptical hole in it.

Does anyone know what these are and what purpose they serve?

I figure they are a resonance chamber or possibly help keep water from getting to the engine when at rest.

I'd like to remove these if they are not needed and clean up the look. I have a picture I can email but couldn't find an easy way to post it here. Seems I have to host the pic somewhere else and that sucks! Would love to simply browse and post it from my hard drive.

They are mufflers. Combined with the water from your exhaust and the partition with the hole in the chamber, they muffle the exhaust. Not a whole lot, but some.

Thanks Red! Looks like I'll be deleting them. Here's a pic of the starboard side.http://www.flickr.com/photos/68699551@N06/7022692101/

Yep, those are just mufflers..... If they aren't in your way, I would just leave em in. Unless you want to be real loud that is. :-)

while you are in there it looks like you need riser gaskets imo

Jason, I have the same boat with the same mufflers. I debated on taking them out and going straight thru but opted out for a couple reasons. 1)If you boat where there are sound ordinances enforced and you ever get pulled over you can simply point and show you have mufflers and 2)Those fiberglass mufflers are about 650 a pop! I have a video of my 454 if you wanna hear what they sound like. youtube- spring commissioning 454

I have the same boat, but am in the process of putting in a new engine with Stainless Gen3 exhaust, so, the mufflers will have to go for now, I'll take a video once its running, and let you know how loud it is. That might be a little while cause its Transom time now!

I would leave em in.........

Leave them in! i just took my boat out for the first time after the transom rebuild and it's loud. First 10 min it's badass and after that annoying. I can't imagine being fully straight piped.
