If you can swing it...just bite the bullet and go full hydraulic. It makes it a much better boat and no worries.

That's the plan in the long run, just short on $$$ after laying out "cash" for the boat. Just wanna get a couple of seasons of use before serious mods begin. I've got lots of little fix up stuff to do over the winter months that is gonna keep my wallet empty, I have the entire drive off now for a paint job and full rebuild.

need someone to watch the transom assembly while you do that to determine if the cable is moving or not looks like the play is in the helm station to me

Did exactly that wife was watching the back as I moved the wheel, no movement at the transom, it's all in the helm.........:-(

Why the drive rebuild? With 375 hp and a light hull I would think you would be good to go.

I apologize, I should have been a little clearer, It's not the actual "DRIVE" that's under rebuild but everything between the transom and the O/Drive itself, Gimble Bearing, seals oil line, drive bellows, Gimble Pin and new Steering Lever. Opt'd for new stainless Gimble Pin and new Steering Arm as they were both well worn due to being loose for years and never tightened, so the square drive surfaces on both the pin and steering lever have significant wear, so while I'm in there I'm going to replace everything (due to age and surface corrosion issues) that I can as I don't want to have to do this again in the near or distant future. Already have all the Bell Housing, Gimble Ring glass bead blasted and primed/painted in epoxy black, still working on the O/Drive corrosion spots and it's next for paint.
