What mph are you seeing?

ellwood 07-06-2019 12:39 PM

About 60 max.

I don't have a 290 sc but I have had a 280 and now a VR 1. That being said I think you have too much pitch for a 496 may go. On my 280 with a 502 mag HO I ran a labbed 27 hydromotive quad four at about 5100 rpm and 72mph. It can with a stock 25 hydromotive and was a tad slower. The 290 sc is a bit more bow heavy then a 280 so I wouldn't think it could swing a 28 pitch unless it was modified.

What brand and modelprop to you have?

Also the rpm and mph don't add up. With a 28 prop you should be low 4000's rpm at 60 mph. A 28 at 4600rpm should be around 70mph.

Are you over trimming the drive?

Padraig 07-06-2019 03:21 PM

Good point.....I didn't do the math.
Elwood, don't take this personally but need to know how experienced you are in running and trimming a boat?
Is the engine stock?
Is the speed you quoted from a GPS?
Do you have trim tabs?

PS. Velocity are great boats..... we'll figure it out.

Thanks . It's a bravo 4 blade.

According to the test it came with a labbed 28 prop so assuming the prop is in good condition it could be correct. As I said my 280 with 502 ran a labbed Hydromotive 27....a 28 bravo is actually closer to a 27 so.........

I remember the conversation I had with Kenny after i bought my 280. He said the prop should be a 27 (between a bravo 26 & 28). I don't hit the limiter on my stock 26 Bravo. Will run 68 just about any day with a lot of fuel and passengers. Best I seen was 74 with the stars all lined up. I sent Velocity my Mercury labbed 28 bravo one for them to tweak. What a waste of money. Now I'm running a stock 26 bravo one and couldn't be happier. Personally I'm not chasing the last mph. Just looking for good all around prop.
