VR1 Owners - Trim Tabs?
 

I recently purchased a new VR1 powered by a 496 Mag HO without trim tabs. I've read and seen (Powerboat Television) test reports of this boat with and without trim tabs. Generally, the reports claim the trim tabs are unnecessary.

VR1 owners, what has your actual experience been, both with and without trim tabs?

i cant say about the vr1 but i have a 280 anmd i put 280kplanes on mine and i would not have one now with out them gives you more control of the boat in crosswinds and changeing conditions not just for speed but better ride also at all speeds:D

I am new to this so bear with me.....

I have the large k-planes on my VR-1. They are not necessary but certainly are nice to have. They really improve the comfort of the ride in choppy water.

cavelocity we saw you at the toys for tots run boat looks good we were in the 39 from north carolina red and white and black boat did not have our 280 down there for that run but had a good time as you get used to the tabs you will like them better:D

Thanks CAVelocity. I assume you have the 280S K-Planes. The latest (March 2004) issue of Powerboat Magazine has a test report on the new Velocity 290 SC Weekender. This boat has the same hull as the VR1 but different deck. The boat that was tested didn't have trim tabs, but Powerboat said offshore, the boat could have used trim tabs and said it would be a good idea to get tabs.

If I install tabs, K-Planes would certainly be customary, but the Dana offerings are substantially less expensive, look good, and appear to use the same hydraulic pumps as the K-Planes.

Any other VR1 owners care to share their experience? Anybody have experience with Dana HP 800 trim tabs?

Thanks for taking the time to provide feedback. 280 K-Planes are on order and their installation gives me something to do while waiting for summer!
