Does your compass work? Velocity/T-Bred 26/280

My compass is mounted directly above my helm. It's off by around 40 degrees. It appears to be caused by the Char-lynn helm from my IMCO steering. Does anyone else have this problem, and how can I fix it?

I tried another compass, and it's the same. I move it about 6 inches either way and it's correct. On the open waters of Galveston Bay, an accurate compass is a must! Thanks!
Jim

See it on the dash? (I know there are distractions in the photo, but it's the only pic I have that shows the location... :D )

Jim, if I remember correctly, it's a Ritchie Compass. It can probably be calibrated to correct for deviation. See this...

Thanks John! It is a Ritchie. The compensation won't go quite that far. I was able to get about 10 degrees. I may end up with a Fluxgate type with remote sensor. Thanks!!

My buddy put one of those new fangled remote pickup ones on his Kryptonite and it works great. I never checked mine for accuracy.

Never used the compass on the dash. Don't trust them. Never seen 2 read the same. Use the GPS compass and if you don't have one you should. They are very inexpensive and the 2 things I like is that they have compass, and also have track back for following your route back if you are in an unfamiliar area and/or at night.
Not to mention they have speed and mine also has depth and water temperature.

Thanks Steet! I'm really struggling with this one. I also use GPS, but I don't trust electronics to get me home. (I still carry paper charts! LOL!) I'm going to call a "Compass Adjuster" to see if he can compensate for some of the deviation. Thanks all!

I hooked up the "toggle" function on my Nordskog GPS speedometer, so now I have an accurate digital compass. I checked it this weekend against a hand-bearing compass, it's dead-on. That'll do for now! Thanks, guys! Jim

Speaking if speedometers, hows the old girl running? Let me know if you're coming up this way anytime soon - hopefully I'll have the Cig in the water soon...

John, I'll do that!

The boat's running great! My wife and I just love it! We ran to Galveston last weekend, what an awesome ride. This weekend we're taking the same route, on our first Poker Run.

Can't wait to see the Cig. That's one of my favorite boats!
