Velocity trivia...

Well we are on the subject when did he get it back? thanks MW

And what practical use do you have for this information ? That's water that has long since been under the bridge, forget about it.

Re: Velocity trivia...

I say he sold the molds to Regal in 1986-87, started building Thoroughbreds in 1991, and got the Velocity name back in 1994. I should know about getting the Velocity name back because I bought a brand new 26' in 1994 and it was a Velocity.

Why don't you come to the VELOCITY RALLY and ask him yourself???

Hessdk 07-27-2004 05:54 AM

Re: Velocity trivia...

After looking at some old price sheets last night I found that it was 1993 when you could purchase a "Velocity" or a "Thoroughbred" from Steve. The Velocity was intended as a "stock" boat with up to a 502 EFI. The Thoroughbred was intended as a "custom" boat with higher horsepower and optional Kevlar(R) hull.

Re: Velocity trivia...

Okay.. let me make this easier apparently there are some people *cough trippin cough cough* have problems with me having asked that question...
I have a 87 22 foot velocity.. I was told by the previous owner Owen Borris (ex- outboard world speed record holder, and friend of stepps from back in the day when they both raced) that it's actually the last boat stepp built before regal... .So im just trying to find out if the years match the what Ive been told.. the serial number is velocity and the orig paint said regal so its a bit confusing... any opinions would be helpful .. and i deeply apologize for asking for an accurate re-count of history... this question was not intended to be offensive however i did know know i needed "practical use for this information" to ask a question on this board... thanks again MW

Don't know what kind of problem you had but I bought a 98 model 280 used in 2002 and found a problem with the gelcoat on the deck. I did not buy this boat from the factory and at the time did not even know anyone there. I called and talked to Steve himself about the problem and he had me bring him the boat. 2 weeks later I picked up my fixed boat and the only charge to me was for a new rub rail that I asked to have installed, and I had him order me a drop in carpet. I can't think of any other boat builder that would do that.

I own a 1986 30! When I orderd the boat I thought I was getting A Steve Stepp Velocity ! What I got was (as I was told) the last hull layed up by Steve and the first riged by Regal ! I have found that Regal was not much help, and they realy did a poor job of rigging! Over the years I have collected a lot of trophys, often out running so called 100 mph. boats with my 75mph boat! My first win came in 87 at a local race on the Chesapeak Bay! I was 3rd in B class at the 89 worlds! My boat may be one of few Regal Stepp childs to have been run so hard and still survived, I know Steve liked his old 22 design best, but I still think my 30 is his best work! OPA P4-33 STEELIN TIME 1986 VELOCITY Stepp child!

I saw pictures of this boat in Steve's office. You already had the name I wanted for my boat. About the time my boat was in the mold my son was taking his first steps so we went with "First Stepp". #1 comment has always been "wonder what the second stepp will be?"

velocity tom, try having a dealership that's not in steves backyard and getting paid on warranty issues! Over the last two years we sold as many as anyone and one of our customers almost got killed because some idiot at the factory didn't know how to install hyd. steering! steve himself denied any wrong doing and the dealership had to eat it! now we are both being sued by the customer.

I'm looking at a 1998 Velocity 260 and am wondering if the 26' measurement includes the swim platform? I was told that, at some point, Velocity started including the platform into the length measurement, when did this happen or have they always included the swim platforms?

Thanks

VelocityMark 08-13-2004 09:59 PM

Re: Velocity trivia...

L9X25

If I am not mistaken they started including the platform around 1997. My brother has a 96 and it was listed as a 26' boat. Mine is a 98 exact same hull and mine is listed as a 28'. They are both called a 280. So if you are looking at a 98 260 the platform is included in that. Hope this helps.

Re: Velocity trivia...

My 1998 was called a Velocity 26. i believe it was when the 1999 models came out, it was changed to 280.

The sale to Regal was finalized in 1986. I know my 1984 velocity was made by Stepp and the last of the real Stepp velocity were made up until 1985.

Steelintime, Great Pics!!! How did you do? Great to see an old school Velocity still out there and keeping the pace,,, not to mention surviving the beating that big races can dish out! Nice Work! MW

Re: Velocity trivia...

velo, Three races, the first was called Brick and we raced off Pointpleasant beach Nj., 4 foot + seas , we finished 2nd but we were told we broke out and were bumped to 3rd! The second race was Atlantic City in 4 to 6s (this was not a good day, could have used about 1000lbs. up front! ) but we finished 4th! Our last race was back to Pointpleasant beach to run in4 to 5s , but this time we had 500lbs. in the nose! We finished 4th. Caimbridge Md. Sept. 26 will be our first flat race and I hope to stay out front of the 32 and 38 footers that have been tough in the big water! Wish us luck!!! SteelinTime. PS. If you go to Nj.offshore and click OPA you can get the scoop!

Velo,
Look on their website and call the factory. Someone will call you back and give you history. I was looking at buying an ancient project and emailed them the same day as I posted my question on here. Few days later sales manager called me back and even suggested when to get a hold of Steve. I was fairly impressed by that since I called several dealers here in Fl and they almost laughed. JMO..

Ok I guess it's not as sensitive an issue as I was led to believe. Steve doesn't mind talking about it at all. My Bad, give him a call.

Everyone's really been quite helpful, after the one thing we cant change is history...thanks again.... MW

Hey Velo! WE WON!!! The old Velocity did me proud! OPA said we all broke out, but I must not have been as bad as some others! The OPA GPS said I ran 67! My unit said 80.5! At the start 3 boats left us in a hurry, I new they had to break out! Our race was with Augie in the Bunny! What a blast! We got out front and then with a lot of course management!!!! ( We kept the Bunny in our wake for 11 laps, If he went inside we would close the door, he went outside, we pushed him out until the last second!) Sorry Augie!! I have been there, and it would have Pi$$ed me off, but the men in the Bunny were cool!!! Besides they beat us bad in there back yard!! 3 times! STEELIN TIME P-4 33.

Velo! We had flat water! Nothing more than our own wakes to deal with! It was a 50 mile drag race and as usual I pushed and almost passed the pace boat at the start! OOOPS!!! I think they should have been running a little faster my self!!! I did pull out about 200 lbs. from the nose!!! Just got word the Camden race is on for next weekend, guess we have to go for two!!! Thanks for your support!! STEELIN TIME P-4 33.

Hey Velo! We did it again!!! Every one eather broke out or just broke! No one got to see there OPA GPS this time?? my unit said 82.5 . With the lead boats half a lap in front " running about 86 " We were given 1st place! One boat ran in P4, then in the second race ran and won in P3???? The skeg on my port drive is missing some chunks and the nosecone on the starboard drive is about to fall off !! There were 15 ft. long 4 ft. wide trees and all kinds of chitt on the course ! Before the race I told some of the other teams with Bravo junk that I could loose a TRS drive and I may not sink but if they loose a Bravo, get ready to go swimming !!!! Gave em something to think about!! Thanks for your support!!! STEELINTIME P4-33.

Steelin! 2-4-2!!! Nice Work (AGAIN!!!) :) and a nice way to finish off the year!! Sounds like you might need a bit of time in the shop to put it all back together again! Love the P4->P3 Switch!! They actually let'em get away with that one? hahaha Priceless, How big was that boat??? .. Nice move on the pre-race Psych! I cant believe they let u guys run in that mess!!! a tree @ 82mph can sneak up on ya pretty fast! Anyways Congrats again!!! Rule #1 Doesn't matter how ya get there as long as you're the first across the line!!!
Great job! Velo.

Thank"s Velo!!! I race for the fun of it but winning is what I'm all about!!!! The P4/3 was a 38 Slingshot with HP's!! What stinks is the OPA official trys to tell me the boat is not as fast as i think!! Ask the guys in P3 that he went buy!! I have raced in A,B,C,D,Modified,Factory2,Local and now P class and some B.S. has not changed in the 18 yrs. I have been racing!!! I will pull the motors next week but I have my Searay and Supra to winterize soon so the Velocity will sit till the first of the year! I would realy like to be in something longer next year, on the other hand I like racing a boat with no payments a lot!!!! Eather way I will be ready with something by spring!!! Thank's for your support!!!!! Ron, STEELINTIME OPA P4-33. ( you know what this last race was called the national championship, maybe I'm P4-1????) PS. you going to Key West?
