hi guys I have a 28 foot imp viper 454 nice boat but looking to upgrade looking at sonic baja and velocity saw the vr1 on TV once amazing the speed out of a single 496 ho my question is out of non steeped hulls what is the advantage to the velocity it seems to me its definitely lighter is that the speed advantage and it seems that velocity always sets speed record but never wins the races i wonder is that a weight issue just got my info from velocity on lineup seems like nice boat but confused I will be in NJ bay most of the time at water gets ruff not looking for fastest boat just fast enough with good ruff water control thanks for any input

Re: general info

The biggest advantage to the Velocity is the hull design with the pad bottom and notched transom. The reason they don't win more races is that they concentrate more on the speed records than on winning individual races. Steve Stepp, the owner feels that speed records are more significant, and a better indicator of a superior design. Hope this helps.

I expect you're referring to the Barnegat Bay which I've also boated in for many years. No doubt the bay gets snotty in the late afternoon! The VR1 and 290SC (same hull) are good "rough water Velocities" that should ride comparable in the bay to the other single engine boats you mention. Definitely consider the Velocity for the Bay - you'll have a boat capable of passing the others in most any condition and given my experience and observations, it's construction will hold up better over time.

I believe that there's a VR1 owner in NJ that Velocity probably could connect you to speak with.

I have been running a VR-1 for the past year and almost 150hrs. Last weekend on Biscayne Bay there was 2 foot wind-blown chop due to 15 knot winds as well as the thousands of boats that were in and around the Columbus Day regatta. I found that a 60 mph cruise was comfortable with the use of the trim tabs. The hull design has a sharp V entry on the bow so for rough water all you need is a little trim tab to "cut" through the rough stuff. When the conditions calm down, simply pull the tabs up and you are running on the "pad" and can easily outrun any other similarly powered and sized boat.

I am sure that there are other boats that would be better for rough water (Pantera), but I don't have much interest in taking a 28' single engine boat in 6 foot seas on a regular basis. I feel that the VR-1 hull is a nice compromise between rougn water handling, top speed, and cruise ride.

Re: general info

I was fortunate enough this past tuesday afternoon to trial run the new 290SC with the 525 and ITS and standoff box. I hit the rev limiter at the top end. Could use a little more cup in the prop. But Damn this boat is fast. It is by now in the boat show in Maryland. This family sport cruiser with full cabin, enclosed head, DVD, Flatscreen, etc, ran just shy of 85 on lake norman. (Half a tank of fuel, and 3 big people). I feel sure when it is dialed in perfect it will be another 2 or 3 mph faster. This is one heck of a boat. I was also impressed with CA's VRI when I rode in it back in July. These boats handle the rough water real well.

Thanks for the input yes i will be in barnagate bay will give the velocity some serious thought where is the closest dealer ? what is the head room in cabin of vr-1 and the 29sc ? what do you think you could by one for i have just received price list from velocity but do they deal at all ?
thanks

Re: general info

The cabin head room is 58" in the SC and 52" in the VR1. They're working on getting some new dealers set up, so I'm not sure where the closest one would be. Call Kenny at the factory [407-321-1340], they'll deal with you!

automan, I have boated in the Barnegat bay all of my life. WHen I ran my 22 Velocity O/B when I was heading home from Party Island in the afternoon I would have 4-6 people in the boat and always find an Outlaw or Scarab to race and my boat would skip across the tops of the waves like a rock and the other boats with there big HP and 2-3 more ft would be chine walking and porpoising trying to keep up with me. In my opinion a Velocity is the perfect boat for Barnegat! I guess that is why I bought a 26 T Bred (280 Velocity), however work and other projects have kept me from using it. I keep my boat at a friend's house in Croydon, if you want I can meet you down there and you can check it out in person. Mine is a 92 but they haven't changed much over the years. Let me know!

I like the sounds of that 29sc 80 ish would be nice single engine what you think this boat could be bought for new ? Sounds like fuel consumption would be much better than twins and still keep the speed what you think i know its 525 but still should be better
thanks

Re: general info

We have an 05 290 with a 525 in it.Fuel consumption is pretty good. The boat cruises 53 mph at 3500 rpm.All around running between 50 to 70 averages 12 to 15 gallons per hour.Top end is at 82 with a 27 px5 Hydro prop. The enclosed head, and flat screen tv,dvd are pretty sweet too.

Tony, any chance of posting pics of your 22' Velocity OB? I too boat on Barnegat Bay and one of my boats is a 1986 RedLine 21'... from what I've read and heard, it's an early 80's Velocity "splash" made in Rhode Island. The boat is a lot of fun & runs high 60's with a 1986 Yamaha 200hp OB. FYI: The fairing was not installed when pic was taken.
Thanks,
Dan

Hey Dan, I will have to look for a pic of the 22 that I had, I sold it 5 years ago and it went to the West Coast of FLA. If you want a pic of my 26 with the old power, you can go to: http://home.earthlink.net/~spdfrk69/

As for your boat, there was alot of companies that tried to duplicate a Velocity, but in my mind, there is nothing like the original. Your hull does look a little similar, however your freeboard looks a little lower. The thing that makes a Velocity faster than most is the Pad bottom, Notched transom and also the outer most chines are curved to pic up air, kinda like what makes cat hulls so fast. I will try to find a pic of my boat and scan it. If you want to see one, there is one for sale on screamandfly.com under boats 20 and over section.

Thanks for the quick reply, Tony. I realize there's nothing like an original velocity design and layup, however I paid THOU$AND$ less for this boat with motor and roller trailer than I would have for the price of an original hull alone. Did Velocity always have a notched transom or was it incorporated in the design in the late 80's? I attached a pic of the transom area to show the pad (no notch) and chines that are slightly angled downward. The interior of my boat needs some cosmetic tlc and the outboard needs to be painted & the skeg straightened, but for the cheap price I paid you can't beat it for a high 60mph boat. High 60's mph with an all original 1986 Yamaha 200hp Precision Blend OB turning a 23p SS prop @ 5,400rpms without setback and jackplate.

BTW, nice looking 26' Velo! What power do you have in it now and what's your speed?
Thanks,
Dan

Jigsaw89, As A Past Velocity 22 And Regal Velocity 230 Owner, I Can Tell You From Your Stern Picture, That Your Boat Is Not A Splashed/copy Of A Velocity. Your Pad Is Too Narrow And There Is No Notch In The Transom. It Is A Good Looking Boat Though!!

As a former F1 Racer that raced against the VR-1 in Pic #4 I can tell you that they are very fast. The team racing it are extremely accomplished racers as well. The only reason they haven't won that many races is, although decent in the rough, not as good as the activator, Kryptonite, Warlock, or Superboat, all bigger boats I might add with the exception of Activator. A great all around boat and will fair well on the Barnegat Bay

Re: general info

Hey Dan, I wasn't knocking your boat. THe thing that I was trying to get across is that with the same power the Velocity would be faster and handle the bay better due to the transom and chine design, plus it is wider than most boats its size. I just hung a pair of 3 liter Mercs on jackplates, haven't even fired them up yet, still need to wire and put new steering on. My wife's grandmother has a place in Barnegat, and I hope to get some use out of it this summer. I used to love hanging out by the lighthouse and taking the blast back home up double creek channel and over to the Dutchman's for some cocktails!
How are you getting your speed numbers? SOunds a little high with that pitch prop. You should try a speed calculation with the rpm, gear ratio, prop pitch and slippage. YOu can try this website:
http://www.go-fast.com/Prop_Slip_Calculator.htm

I'll keep in touch, maybe we can hook up in the spring?

We're men around here, I wasn't offended by anything implied or posted.

My speed in the upper 60's is verified by a hand held GPS that I borrowed from my neighbor. I could be wrong about the prop pitch. For what it's worth, you can tell someone put a little tlc into the prop blades.

Upon purchase, I drained the fuel tank, replaced the OB fuel line, fuel filter, 2 fuel pumps, had all 3 carbs professionally cleaned and rebuilt, replaced the plugs & wires and had Ocean Beach Marina in Lavallette fine tune the carbs. The boat was sitting for 2 years prior to my purchase and the fuel in the tank and motor was badly varnished. I have no idea how much the boat weighs, but I saw the speeds with me (230 lbs), 9 gallons of high test fuel and a coast guard package on board. Nothing I don't need.

Tony, I live in Bergen county and go to our shore house in Toms River every chance I get. Keep in touch and we'll BS boats over some drinks.
