Jons, Steve Stepp said the hull will handle as much power as you want to put in one. I followed Excess Energy when it was first build in 91 because of the FORD power. Talked to the owner a few times over the years. Findly ended up with the boat 6 years ago. Total make over, you name it we did it. Boat had #3 on it, now has #5 and close to being done with the PSI build. Thanks Bob

Bob's boat looks sterilized in person , new paint , interior , gauges , rigging and motors . Plus anything else you can think of , using only the highest quality parts . That just begins to discribe it , and dosen't do it justice .

Reading this post makes me want to buy another Velocity ......
I recently went 104mph in my 41' with procharged 540's. I know not the fastest on this thread but I was extremely happy with that number.
I am slowly assembling the parts and pieces for my new mill, 548 cube 700ish horse for my VR1 wont be the fastest for sure, but pretty damn fast.....
Should run mid to high 90s if set up wright.
Are you running a left hand prop on you Vr1? When that boat set the record they ran my left hand hydro 29 race labed. |
its got a right hand labbed 27 on it now.
Well back then it didn't have a interior or a cabin. I have a lot of seat time in that boat. We ran a few pokers runs with it when Scott and Bob were not racing it. I throttled it and mike from Halls prop. drove. What a blast! I still have that prop. we ran.
I wonder why they changed it over to right hand? It runs great now and handles well..so I will leave well enough alone.
Because that's normal. Running a left hand prop helps even out the torque. the eng. pulls one way and the prop pulls the other. easer to keep on the pad. plus it puts the torque down on the cone clutch instead of up on the cap. I just did a 280 with no hyd. steering. big difference spinning a left hand prop.
At 104mph that 41' must have ridden like a Cadillac . A number like that is a great speed for any boat . And I think most Velocity's are happy when going over 100 .

Man the blue 390 with the 700 mercs and nxt,s drives like its on rails. Ran it at 114-116 mph and that thing has everything in it. and ran over evrything ,big boat wakes and sloppy water. My stag. 390 was the same way. what a differance from a side buy side.

Are you sure a drive guy told me the other way.
The staggard COG makes it handle the rough water much easier . The 41' I had would go through almost anything at speed with little effort . That's how it got nick named the "Bus" .
Yes but it also slows it down. more weight forward.
I have owned a side by side 30' and a staggard 41' Velocity . Staggering improves speed by moving props closer together , it also improves handling by lowering weight in the hull for better cornering and creating a balanced COG to help handle larger waves . Driving with big motors at high speed in rough water IMO requires running flat or nose only slightly up . When airing out the side be side in big water the rear drops faster , which increases the chance of tripping and stuffing the nose . Running pointed to the moon may work better in calm conditions or on rivers and lakes . Drive like that in big water and risk becoming a submarine . Notice that the fastest boats around are staggard . IMO the the faster you go the more important handling is . Your probably right that a side by side might stay on the pad easier with moderate power . So the best choice may depend on what motors you have and where you boat .
I have had 3 390 one staggered. when you move weight forward it slows down period. if you can drive you don't moon shot it in rough water. And yes when you bring the drives in closer it does pick up speed in a ventilated boat that runs flat. what you gain in stager you loose in moving weight forward. we took the 500 efis 565 hp out of my 2000 390 and put them in the 05 that we built that was a staggered boat. same speed 91 mph. Yes it rode and drove 100 time better. In a single eng. velocity if you passenger moves to the back of the boat you will pick up speed. Its all about leverage and how much it takes to keep it up on the pad. That right from Steve Stepp
Try running bigger power and faster speeds in non-flat water . Maybe than you will understand where I'm coming from . I to have known Steve for a long time , but I only have experence in his boats with large power . I respect your opinion on stock mec's w/bravos , I've never had one of those . An overpowered boat dosen't need to use the pad for speed like an underpowered one does . I can tell you for a boat to handle right when going very fast , flat is where it's at .
Where you at the Velocity run back some time ago in Maryland with your 30.
Started doing the Maryland runs up here in 91 or 92 in a 30' w/750's and #3's . She would cruise at 90-95 and top at 110 . All the big boats would speed up when things got rough hoping to have an advantage . It didn't help , we were able to run up front in that boat at most of the events I attended for more than 10 years. If you came up for any of them you may remember us . Boat spent a lot of time in the air . Someone asked Steve about my aggressive driving and he said with a smile , that's how it should be done . The 41' I picked up was the old BFI race boat w/staggard 900's , that handled rough water with ease . Sadly it was stolen a little over a year ago . We are both fans of the brand , and I know you go way back with Steve . My point is IMO running on the pad helps in flat conditions but not as much in the sloppy stuff . I mean no disrespect , just a difference of opinion based on my experences that started with my 100mph 33' turbo Fountain in the 80's.

My 41' liked the slop , helped to loosen up the boat . It would give me a couple of extra mph .
Was your 30 white and brown with a big eng. hatch. We ran down to the tiki bar on Salomans island with the owner of the Velocity Dealership up there Ken. Back in 2002-3 I think.

No I think it was back in 01 02 We went up with Steve and Kim. I had the 390 that had the orange rip down the side and blue checkered flag on the race hatch. Joel Ross was there with his pro charged 41 and the new owner of velocaraptor also was there. but I cant remember for sure what year.
cig92 has a 41 velocity with 6's (CGS FEROCIOUS)that runs like a scalded dog. only has 600 mercs in it now but had big power years back and was well over 100. pm him for details i think the boat is for sale
The CGS holds the record for the fastest Velocity that I know of , at aprox 130mph with 1300's back when it was racing . My 30' started off blue and white , then was later done in all white . I remember being at the Solomans run . I think I had my boat there with me on that one . The Bay got a little rough on the way down if I remember right .

Sure do miss that boat. Would love to get back in one some day. |
I would love to find a race deck 30 .

The fastest one I know of is in No. California. It's a 2005 260. Was bought as an all white boat new, now a bright green with purple flames all over it. It has an all aluminum 700 cu. in. motor topped with a 8.3 Whipple in front of an X power surface drive. Said he just ran 136.3 recently and had more to go, but understandably was getting a little concerned and let off. A very nice boat w/ no expense spared.
pictures of GPS at speed or videos to back it up ?

I would need to see that to believe it! |
So how about: "Fastest Substantiated" Velocity?
I got a 98 26 that runs 87.8 all day on gps .. hoping to touch 90 with a 1/4 tank of gas and a nice fall day :) know were near the fastest velocity but im sure in the average range:)
