Not mine and know nothing about it besides what this post says and did see a short auction on Ebay for same drive earlier this week.
It was re-listed, now gone.
Thinking you may try to PM the seller and see if still for sale.
Sounds like it may have issues but rare piece and I assume sold, but...
good luck hunting and shopping

SS is worth MPH in most small boats with small blocks.

Aussie695 03-21-2014 12:44 PM

I know someone selling one of these thats local to me... hes asking 2k for it. Was going to be for his 16 donzi project but ended up selling it this year. How would it do on a powerplay xlt?

SB 03-21-2014 01:14 PM

He'll get 2k for it half way quickly if in decent shape.

Have him post it for sale here and the other forums, and he'll unload it.

Powerplay's, like many other boats under say 21ft with small blocks and buried in the water Alfalfa drives will pick up very good speed with an SS.

Aussie695 03-21-2014 01:34 PM

Right on... then I'll end up taking it off his hands knowing I can sell it if need be.

SB 03-21-2014 01:58 PM

I judst payed $900 for one with a blown lower , if that means anything to you.

I'd grab it. I have seen them sell for $2500.

Real problem is, they rarely go up for sale anymore. Some years back 2/3/4 would go up within the forums per year....now 0/1/2.

BTW: A few 185 owners over at BF's with SS's. One runs high 80's with a small block.

Aussie695 03-21-2014 02:17 PM

Holy smokes! Thats very promising than... My dad just built a 383 with 455hp and 468tq that we are putting in the xlt. She should surely fly.

I will have to check out BF's. Been looking for a forum with people that own xlts...

Thanks for the tip

SB 03-21-2014 02:46 PM

He was well into the 70's with a 383. A few other non Powerplays well into 70's also with 383's and SS's.
A lot of people have gained 5-7mph with an SS and no other change....other than prop for the change of course.

Again, the SS is a hot item with the smaller performance boat crowd.

Aussie695 03-21-2014 03:13 PM

Im not one for the forums and doing much chatting... but i didn't know there was still a smaller performance crowd still... lol Like microboats... Because all I see anymore is if you dont have a 24' and bigger boat... who cares than.

Ryan00TJ 03-22-2014 07:40 AM

I picked up my SS in near mint shape off Ebay for $1500 in 08'. Tore it apart and verified all clearances and specs, added new seals, pressure tested. I reshimmed the upper and lower gears a tad tighter than Merc stock spec and have been pounding on it since every year. Adding the SS to my Challenger brought my propshaft centerline to 3.5" below the pad bottom. Gained 5 mph and 500 rpms with no prop change. Had to go to a 4 blade QIV labbed prop and ended up with 6.5 mph total gain with the drive. Best of 80.5 GPS with the 383.

Like stated they are getting pretty rare and hard to find in useable running condition. My advice if you indeed find one is to have it broken down and clearances and specs verified and seals replaced. At least pressure test the drive to verify the seals are ok. Last thing you want to do is grenade the drive as certain parts are as rare as the drive itself.

Biggus 03-22-2014 08:03 AM

As mentioned above, I had an Alpha SS but sold it last year. A buddy of mine has 2 of them (were on a 24 Donzi Spitfire w/320EFI's) If you are still looking, reply and I'll ask him if he wants to part with them.

SB 03-22-2014 08:31 AM

Hey Biggus - it's CFM from the other boards. Your PM Box is full.

I'll ask my buddy when I see him (he's on a snowmobile vaca) He knows what they are worth, I'd imagine he's want 2k or so (ea.)

That with a stock alpha will probably run 72-73 maybe add a ss drive and ballpark 75-76 possibly. I run " problem child", 185 w/ 600+ HP SBC n/a. W/ that and a ss drive I ran 87-88. I reglassed transom and raised another 2" but never did get a GPS speed. Broke the ss so now I am on to blueprinting the bottom, switching to a bravo setup w/ hopefully a -2 or -3 lower. Gonna freshen engine and of course give a lil more HP lol.

Any xlt questions just ask. Have ran this hull since 2002 and know most of the quirks and setups that work

Sorry gave up on the search for a while and am back at it again now that the interior has been redone

GREENTENSION 06-04-2015 09:13 PM

I have one with very low hours on it. It is in excellent condition and still has the original shine to it. I can give you more details about it, but first I must tell you that I want what I paid for it($2500) and that I live up in Canada so not sure on how to get it to you. Let me know if you are interested. Thanks

Miss20miles2887 06-04-2015 09:32 PM

I will relay the message to my husband. Could you email me info [email protected]

Just to keep you guys inspired to keep looking for an Alpha SS.

1st time out with the one I finally just installed. 6mph gain so far. Didn't stay in it as I'll typically do for speed runs....Boat is out of prop - will have to try more.

Wow! I picked up an SS last year to replace my stock Alpha that's on my Donzi Minx. That Minx runs 60mph on GPS max. Are you telling me that simply bolting this on may show me 68 to 70mph?
That Minx will be a handful at 70! How friggin fun is that hot rod gonna be!:boat:

SB 07-14-2015 07:32 AM

This world can't promise you anything.

Howvwer, most little boats typically pick up about 6mph...some a little more.

That said, my experience with people using this are usually starting out with mid 60 to upper 60mph boats, with most being high 60's to 70mph before bolting them on.

So....I guess you'll see on a 60mph boat.

I can tell you this, the boat I strapped this on was very good with fuel mileage....seems even better with the SS. It went on a 20+mile trip and used less fuel than it normally does.

Anyway, you'll see some sort of gains...I'm sure.
