alpha SS is NOT a budget drive. it is basically a collectors item. expensive to buy and more expensive to keep together. find a bravo boat on craigs with cracked block and rotted interior.

I'll echo that - the ONLY reason to run an alpha ss is if the boat came with one and you want to keep it original or if you happen to find one (they're getting even harder to find...) and have a small, light boat with an alpha drive and transom assembly already in it and enough power to go faster than the gearcase on an alpha will support... and even then in a lot of cases a bravo (or even a throw away chinese alpha knockoff) is probably often a better option...

I know of a couple budget friendly drives and assemblies

sick stinger budget drives are what we need , / dnk what is so pricey bout keepin ss runnin parts together ? / budget bravo may be better for 24 ft Baja we run rough water so ss may not be best?

Sick Stinger 07-15-2016 09:01 AM

900 for a clean old style bravo or 1600 for a pair
Transom assembly for 700

think bravo 1

Think bravo 1? Not sure what you mean.

if you are close enough to boston, Mike (Stinger) is a good way to go. especially since he scavenged the entire area for donor boats and has them all. the advantage of finding and stripping a whole boat is you get the coupler (100 used), the bravo water pump and brackets (350 used) the bravo shift bracket (50) the water inlet hose which will handle suction, the drive oil bottle and mount... I can go on and on. changing drive setups requires a LOT of little expensive pieces. and taking it apart is a great lesson on where and how it all goes back together.

^ correct. Takes a bunch of little odds and ends. Shift bracket can be rescued just remove the shift interupt switch.
