Scarab 377 Staggered
I'm looking for a 1979-1984 Wellcraft Scarab 377 with the staggered engine layout as a project boat. Must have all rigging and power. Must not be bottom painted.
Target price: under $10,000 depending on condition Are any of these hiding around? |
They pop up occasionally on he powrboat swap shop on Facebook.

Thanks for the tip-I just requested to join that group. |
One on Craigslist I saw last night

did it on my Stinger, while it's not the easiest job it's not the worst either...
|
What do you consider to be the worst job, so I'll have a frame of reference?

I took the bottom paint off the bow area of my Formula 242LS. Why someone would paint the whole hull black is beyond me. I used Aqua Strip. It worked very well. I did it about 3 times. It got it down to the original gelcoat. The only downside was the boat had black bottom paint over red bottom paint over the white gelcoat. When I got the gelcoat cleaned up the red bottom paint was stuck in all the sanding grooves from where they rough sanded the bottom to prep it for paint. I think they sanded it with 20 grit sandpaper, the grooves were so deep. Ive heard that bottom paint only knocks off 3-4 MPH, so does the cost and effort to remove bottom paint justify the speed gains on an old staggered 377 Scarab, probably not. It just creates a negotiating point to get the boat cheaper.

I know of one in the Tri-City area. I'm not sure of the guys story but he has been out of contact for a while and the boat has been sitting all summer, he may be willing to sell. It is definitely a 377 Scarab but can't say for sure if it's staggered or not.

There is a teal one on the Palm Springs CL without power named "Mufasa". Reportedly ordered by Las Vegas Casino magnate Steve Wynn. Upholstery is trashed, unsure if all the driveline is there. Good project for someone with a trailer to bring it home on. Might have Speedmaster drives, maybe PHughes could identify. I'd look closer if it wasn't in California. |
I bet that one is a soggy mess!!!! I would think with bottom paint means left in the water.
|
Right. Another reason I'm reluctant to buy a bottom painted boat.
Makes me wonder if all the old cruisers out there who live at the marina are rotten hulks and nobody cares because they don't demand much from their structure. |

And to think Bertram, Hatteras, Ocean, Viking build boats that stay in the water. But then maybe they build their boat correctly. |
Well, , I thought I had a lead on one locally, but the owner won't schedule a time for me to come see it. My guess is someone wants to look like they're selling a boat, but not actually sell a boat.

it's a real long shot, but a 1979 white w/ blue stripe staggered 377 was for sale in n.e. ohio area code 440.
no bottom paint on a trailer but it was originally listed 6-12-12. named B'laster, one of bill wesley's old boats. maybe start a thread about it here and/or on facebook, someone knows somebody that knows where it's at they just have to hear about it. |
bump
I'm still on the lookout for the "right" boat |
There is one on the race boat swap shop on Facebook right now.
|
I'll let someone else take the Hulk! Lol!
|
That was my thinking too, but you never know what other peoples tastes are. The interior looked pretty good, but it had bottom paint too.
|
This is on eBay, has bottom paint.
