We just went 3 weeks ago. Very calm conditions and glass next to the island. Even better at 2pm coming back to Huntington harbor. Took our 30' Formula F302..
Here is a link to windfinder. bookmark it. It was pretty accurate. I look at wind speeds and wave height. I just can't figure out why, at times wind speed decreases and wave height predictions increase. Maybe wind direction blows the waves flat? You can search all areas, Dana point, HB, Avalon, San Pedro buoy etc.

We had lunch at Steve;s Steakhouse. Food was great and so is the second story view of the harbor. A total of 5 of us went and everybody was happy. Since I'm still new to Catalina trips, I learned something useful from someone who works over there. I will hold who it is to protect his job but........If you have several people, drop everyone off at the Green Dock, Casino side. (other side is for water taxi). Keep one helper on board, go get your mooring and pay for two people to water taxi over!! You experienced boaters probably knew that. Spend the money on lunch!!

If you decide against Catalina, Tequila Jacks and Yardhouse inside Rainbow harbor are fun lunch trips for us. If you haven't seen the L dock outside Parkers Lighthouse grille lately, its still in poor shape. We tied up there a few months back but only for a few minutes. On two occasions we went into Rainbow harbor and called the harbor master there. He can see you come in from the little booth above the rental boats by Yardhouse. Tell him the size and description of your boat. Ask if you can use a vacant slip for an hour for lunch and he will probably direct you in to one. We were able to dock outside Tequila Jacks both times, closest row.
