ECU reprogramming
I know this has been covered adnauseum, but has anyone found a way to program a MEFI3 computer for a small block outside of the 4 authorized dealers? I am looking at over 1500.00 to do 2 computers for my 383's I am building by the time I do shipping, (both ways) dyno time, and programming both ECU's. I talked to Mark today at Precision, he was very helpful, however, the news he gave me was, well, expensive
Seems like not too many folks build up small block, and have their ECU's reprogrammed, actually mark made it sound as if I might be the pioneer. For now I will be running it with a stock calibration using my existing EFI components. I have an o3 6.0 powerstroke that I have tuned with an SCT that runs mid 13's on tuning alone so I respect the value of tuning, but the $1500.00 is hard to swallow.
Any insight is appreciated. I am about to say screw it and go Carbs, but I really like the EFI reliability.

Re: ECU reprogramming
I have just done my BBC through Mark. Great guy, even better service. Awesome. But with all the shagging around, filters, fuel preasure guages, regulators and porting i am just about ready to pich the whole lot in the tide and use an air gap manifold and a bigs carberator. I bet i will make better HP and torque with a good well proven set up. Bet the gas milage is real close as well. And lets face it. Easy, easy, easyDown side. Pump the gas befor you start. Wooohh. Just my thoughts, Anyone want a MEFI3 cool fuel for BBC. Jas

Re: ECU reprogramming
You need to program the ECM on a dyno or in the boat with an 02 sensor. I have a prop shaft dyno that I can dyno up to 800 PSHP with and calibrate the ECM with the engines in the boat. Where are you located? There are not many, if any "canned" programs for small blocks. Changing to a 383, with a bigger cam and/or better heads will require some major map changes. Your only other option would be to make a test run with an 02 sensor installed and send the ECM and data to be programmed, then try it again and keep repeating until it's right. Might be one try or 5.
