Hydraulic roller lifters, to pump up or not?
When instaling Crane hydraulic roller lifters should they be pumped up before installing them or not? Using Crane roller rockers if that makes a difference.

No.
Cranes book speeks on that subject. They say it's a bad idea because it "could cause the lifter to act as a "solid" and prevent obtaining proper preload."
I just dip them in oil and install to have atleast a film around the outside.

Tim, I do just as Dave says. Always been ok. If it were me, adjust all the valves with the intake off so you can SEE zero lash. After all valves are adjusted, fill motor with oil and prime like crazy.
Did you end up sending the carb to Nicherson? And also, you by any chance compare the fuel passages dia to the current jets? That had me wondering if the jets were not doing anything, as you mentioned.
Good luck, go grab a beer and take a shower.

Jerry,
The jets were larger than the passages. The carb was basically running out of gas at WOT and that is why the A/F ratio was going up as RPM increased. The carb is with Dean now. I will be setting the lash with intake off. I will prime and flush the system lines just for grins. I was thinking about turning the engine over by hand while priming. My heads may be done next week, still working on the drive and gimbal. When are you coming to get the trailer?

Brace said it would be around 3 1/2 weeks for the trailer, which puts it right at end of this week. I really don't expect to hear anything thou until after next week. We are ready for it.
Sorry about the carb. I hope you don't feel I mislead you on the condition of it. I put alot of trust in Bruce Dudley. Guess I can be added to the list of all the people he screwed over. I didn't have any issues with my motor after the carb was reworked the 2nd time, as I have stated numerous times on this board. When in fact I thought it was great.

I am fine with it, I was thinking about sending it to Dean anyway. Since my heads were not ported my setup would be close but a little different anyway and the last go around with engine mods and jetting was a PITA. Let me know when you come to get the trailer. You can stop by for a travel break and or some dinner. If the weather is good we can sit on the deck and have a beverage of some sort. I am about a 1/4 mile from Brace's down river. Is your wife making the trip as well?
