HP 500 Carb Upgrade to 650HP
Who has a "kit" with bolt on
heads
intake
carb
ignition
I would like to increase my 500s to 650-700 HP.
Can this be done with a pump gas bolt on of the above parts?
I would like to leave the bottom end alone.
If I need a Whipple, do I need to do head, carb and ignition upgrades? I would think the MSD would be required to address the igher revs. I do not think the heads come from merc with inconel exhaust valves.
I understand Tyler Crocket has a kit that will run to 600 Hp.
Any idea of the cost to do this?
Thanks
Shawn

Not very reliable though...
I think that you should consider the reliability of such an engine. It will need a camshaft with very fast opening and closing lobes with very high lift causing valve spring, lifter, rocker arm and valve seat wear. Be prepared to rebuild the valvetrain every 40 or 50 hours of operation. Compression ratios need to be elevated for such powerful camshafts or the engine will be a real dog at low speeds with very poor idle characteristics.
You better start thinking about an engine with more than 502 cubic inches so the horsepower will come from displacement and not wild valve timing and high rpm.
Some people say a reliable and smooth running engine can make that kind of horsepower on pump gas but I haven't seen one yet!
If it were easy and reliable we would all have 650-700 horsepower NA engines in our boats.
Sincerely
Dennis Moore

I'm thinking that you will need more than just a kit. The entire engine will need to be gone through. The only exception would be if you added a 8:71. Even then, you'll at least need to change the pistons, so a tear down is still in order. I'd have to really question the reliability of a 502 making 700hp N/A.
