Default Stripping paint

I have a 1989 Formula 223LS with gel coat in great shape. I would like to take the Imron paint job off of the sides. It is the regular late 80's style formula paint job with few stripes the length of the boat and a bigger stripes on the back. I would like to get the entire boat white (which is the color except where the stripes are) then put a vinyl graphics kit on the side. Does anyone know of products or techniques to get the paint stripped off without hurting the gel coat? I want to try to match the area where the paint was with the rest of the boat as closely as possible.

Soda blast it, thats what we do. Have someone from your area come and blast the old paint off, it will leave a fine pitted finish on the gel coat just perfect for the next coat of paint to adhere to. I would paint both sides complete, it will be a lot less stressful than trying to match the old.

Airplane stripper will most likely be your best bet - just be sure to get one that specifically says that it is safe for gelcoat.

Most hardware store strippers will soften and damage the gel.

mcollinstn,

Airplane stripper....awesome. I am a Navy pilot so I just might be able to get my hands on some airplane stripper at a reduced price :-) Any other suggestions from anyone would be appreciated.

I took stripes off of my boat don't let that stuff sit to long where I had stripper it it kind of embossed the fibreglass and was able to see where I had stripped also once your stripes are off the gel is not going to match do to fading but you said your vinyling over also one last thing don't gouge the gel because that becomes a bit soft as well good luck

You'll be wetsanding after you strip (1000 wet paper). Just make sure to let the stripper evporate fully out of the pores of the gel before sanding. And buy lots of beer - for the friends who will be wetsanding with you.

Then you can look forward to polishing compound and a speedbuffer.
