Unhappy mercruiser inboard engine doesn't want to go foward

I BOUGHT A BOAT WITH A MERCRUISER INBOARD ENGINE AND TOOK IN THE WATER AND IT DIDN'T WANT TO GO FORWARD IT ONLY WOULD GO IN REVERSE. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO CHECK BECAUSE IT IS THE FIRST TIME I OWN A BOAT. PLEASE HELP !!!!

Open the engine hatch with motor off, and have someone else shift lever at cockpit forward neutral and reverse. Watch the linkage and see if it engages. How long has the boat been sitting?

I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG IT'S BEEN SITTING I JUST GOT THE BOAT 4 WEEKS AGO FROM AN 86 YEAR OLD MAN, HE HAD IT SITTING THERE. WHEN I LOOKED AT ENGINE IT LOOKED CLEAN AND THE ENGINE LOOKS REBUILT. 140HP 4 CYL INBOARD

I GOT IT FOR TWO HUNDRED

Sounds like blown fwd. cluch pack in trans.
