Default Exhaust Noise Limit?

Came back to my truck at the ramp and park ranger put a noise limit ,info warning pack on my windshield, has any one been checked. I read that the new SAE 2005 is 1 meter back and 1.5 meters up from the exhaust must not be over 90 Db or 88Db.depending on year. What is the Dbs on a set of stock 496s through transom?

There has been much discussion on this subject on the Hotboat.net site. I would go there and do a search.

As far as your 496's are concerned, pretty much any boat with thru-transom exhaust above the waterline will not pass the test without some type of mufflers.

Is this rule only in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia or nationwide?

Does the age/original configuration of the boat matter?

Am I "grandfathered" being that my boat is older than 20 yrs.?

???

I think all depends on the region, and how good/bad of mood they are in that day. Seems when the boys are onboard they come knockin more than when I got the wife.

Silent choice is illegal in WI. I open mufflers when I'm offshore and not close to homeowners.

I haven't heard of anybody being bothered in my area. The funny thing is that I can drive my boat right into Washington, D.C. no hassles.

your original post states what the law will be in california effective 1/1/05
something like 88-91db at transom depending on year of boat, and 75db at any time when operating on the water.
i boat at havasu, which is patrolled by san berno county sherrif of california, and they can reach 5 miles from the border to enforce.
oh yea, and no switch-able mufflers either.
article in last months hot boat magazine.

All law enforcement agencies can enforce their state laws anywhere on the lake just FYI.

This is a California law only, and have been told by an Arizona Cop that nothing will change as far as they are concerned.

The California cops that also patrol the lakes are another issue though.

Like was stated above swithable mufflers are not allowed. As far as using full time mufflers to meet the requirements, Rex Marine (per the Hotboat.net site) is working on mufflers at this time. We have 500's on our Cig with Corsa mufflers which do not meet the noise requirements but hopefully it is quiet enough as to not attract attention.

This new law should be interesting. There are Commercial fishing boats here in San Diego that I know would not meet the standards either, but I am sure they won't be targeted.
