V8 update
Well, the previous owner of the 350hp V8 Johnson got it back last week.
He offered to trade me back my Mercury for the V8, all at his expense...
The engine that I effectionatley refer to as "Satan's outboard" will not be missed.
Well, here is the report that I got as to why it did not start very often.
Starter was weak, so he swaped it out with a new one.
Timing base was bad, swaped it as well.
These two things cured the starting problems I was having.
He then did a compression check.
7 cylinders were 160lbs, and 1 was less than 100lbs.
Tore the engine down and found that the sleeve had spun 3.4 inches.
Luckily I did not use the boat much, so damage was minimal.
New sleeve and piston and the powerhead is now going onto a drag boat down in Florida.
My stock mercury arrives this week.
Thank God for doing business with men of their word.
I got very very lucky.

Just had to vent some summertime frustration...
I actually wish I had the chance to see how my Banana would perform with a V8 running on all 8 cylinders.

Re: V8 update
JWilmoth,
What model?
I looked at a late 80's 33 Sonic SE last year.
I almost bought it, but I didn't have the money to restore it, plus it needed a trailer.
I made a low offer and never heard back from the owner.
It had twin Johnson V8's on a bracket that came out from under the swim platform.
Very large cockpit that went all the way to the stern.
I will try to find a picture.

Re: V8 update
Mine is a 33SE also. Stainless Marine bracket, 30" K-Planes, Imco Hyd. Steering and I do have a trailer. I've not advertised it for sale and had really thought about selling it until someone made me an offer earlier this year. It's a great rough water boat...good heritage.
