Final Countdown to Don Aronow Race

Okay, we are down to the final days of the preparation of the race. With just about 4 weeks left, it breaks down like this:

Helmets may be either DOT or Snell approved.

HORBA has added another class just for turbine boats.

That means the gasoline powered cats and vees will not have to compete directly against the turbine boats (Yes, we heard that there will be more than one....but no formal entry beyond Miss Geico)

We have two people interested in setting speed records and have made provisions for that with experienced officials that have done this certification before.

We will be increasing the entry fee on June 1st. For those procrastinators in the crowd, get with it and send your entry in today before the increase. We need a boat count as early as possible for safety reasons. The earlier you register, the more you help us pull this off....we appreciate your help. Entry form on www.historicraceboats.com

Thursday. Boat inspections will be in the dry pit area (Race Village) on Thursday. You must be registered no later than 3 PM or you don't run. Inspections go until 6 PM. Drivers meeting on Thursday evening @6:30 in City Hall of Sunny Isles Beach.

Patrol boats and safety boats will meet in the same place immediatley after the drivers meeting.

Friday morning, driver physicals in the pit area 8 - 9 AM. Boat blessing @ 9:30 with Jim Black. Boats will start to leave for milling area around 11AM. Race start @ Noon.

Firday afternoon, class winners will be awarded trophies and be asked to prepare their boats for a Champion's Boat Parade through Sunny Isles Beach, then return to the Race Village for display.(Dry Pits).
Friday night...There will be entertainment and live music, I believe, until 11PM Friday night. Old Racers get together will be going on in Dania at Jimbos Raw bar until 10PM.

Saturday, OSS testing and APBA Racing and the Florida Poker Run will be leaving at 11AM. HORBA Historic Race Boat and Car show in Race Village all day.

Saturday night, a big party for Old Racers, HORBA Don Aronow Memorial Racers, Florida Poker Run participants, and OSS racers at Gulfstream Track and Casino. Continuous showing of old video of races on big screens, food and live entertainment.

Sunday the OSS races in front of Sunny Isles Beach.

We have heard the talk for years, that the racers of today wished that they had a chance to race on the open ocean the way it was done years ago......a lot of work has made this a reality...take this opportunity while you have the chance.

It is going to be a great race, a race that you will be proud to have been part of.
Today is the day that you have been waiting for.

Don't let anyone ever say of you:

He slept beneath the moon,
He basked beneath the sun;
He lived a life of going-to-do
And died with nothing done

A very big THANK YOU. We were losing faith in the offshore crowd for a while there, but all is well now.

We have had a great response to this race with more and more entries every day and we are vey happy to say that we feel that we have achieved our goal of producing a quality event that honors one of the sport's founders, Don Aronow.

We have also attracted the top people from the many areas of offshore.

In addition to Miss Geico and Don's original race boat called the Cigarette, we now have entered Bill Pyburn from the poker run side, Bob Teague from the active racing side and boat builders like Randy Scism from MTI, who will be bringing his latest innovation. Lavey Craft and Pantera are in. Fountain also will be represented by two race boats.

There are a number of privately entered Cigarette's and we have about 1/2 dozen historic boats racing plus more on the land for display.

We are happy to see racers from other organizations beyond OSS coming to race. The Muscle crew is on board too.

And the best news of all........Michael Aronow is coming and will be signing the checkered flags of all the winners.

We are trying to make this as easy as possible for everyone to attend. If you want to pay by credit card, that is now all set, just contact us for instructions on how it will be handled.

The average weather during that time period calls for calm water, so watch the big cats set new records for this run. Everyone who races will actually be setting new records for their class, as we have professional record people on hand.

We have special patches that will only be given to the racers, in addition to the event patch that Brownie has made up. And a special personal Thank You certificate, from Michael Aronow to those racers that participate in this race to honor his dad.

Don't miss this. It is shaping up to be the biggest event of the year. We have over 60 of the old racers coming for the weekend and you can meet them at the big party at Gulfstream on Saturday night.

Live band at the Race Village right after the race and winner's boat parade on Friday, will be playing until 10PM.

Keep those entries coming we would like to see 50 boats !!!
