I have 3 sets of props (different pitches and cups) and changing pitch does help, but then I can over rev. Currently cruise is 3800rpm at about 34mph using GPS using 24pitch props.

My 383 conversion would net you about 300 hp and is doable on your 20 k budget if you sell your engine and drive. Plus the resale would be better. The performance should be like night and day difference especially getting on plane.

I guess it's possible to keep it in the 20K range but what about the HP to weight thing. Twin 300Hp 383 with B1 drives come in about 1000 pounds each. My 8.2 with B3 comes in around 1300 pounds. So I get 600HP and increase weight by 700 pounds, also increase drag with the extra drive. Figure if I go from 415 to 500 I should come out ahead. If I go with twin B3's then I save in buying one drive but increase weight by an additional 400 overall. As before I appreciate the comments but am I missing something?

383's will make 350 HP each not 300.. So there is 100 more HP right there. They do not weigh 1000 lbs each.. Prob 200 lbs less than a big block. With twins you will not need a B3.. You will use B1's Little less weight than a B3 but not a lot. More drag due to extra drive ?? Yes but this is a Brick you are pushing.. Not a missile. What you need is power and bite on the water which you will not get with a single pushing a brick.

My weight numbers came from the Merc website for the 5.7 "including the drive". I do appreciate the input, cannot quite figure out how I could sell what I have, redo the transom and by two engines and drives for 20K. Sure like the idea other then right not I have to hand upside down just to replace the impeller.
