Check the simple stuff, going for the more in depth stuff has always cost me time when it was an easy fix / brain fart.

If the lanyard was loose or off neither engine would start.

My old boat was in Neutral and would not crank over, after pulling the shifter out I found a green corroded wire/crimp connector.

Do you have batteries you can swap out to rule that out? Just because it shows 12 volts doesn't mean it's good. Dealt with that this spring on another guys boat. Switched batteries and fired right up after spending hours checking other stuff

Find the slave solenoid check for voltage on one side with key on and both sides of it when hitting the start position, if it has voltage both sides when hitting the switch its good if not jump it and try.
If that is good then go to the starter. Grinding noise leads me to believe starter went bad or was going bad and hopefully you didn't do it long enough to screw up flywheel.
