Drive Ratio and Durability - Any correlation???

long term durability with less load. then yes. the straight cut xr's can handle greater loads.
have a look at the 2 side by side and you will see for yourself.
it's about money and the manufacturing process as well...having 20 years in engineering powertain development and testing i've seen it all...on a new product at ford the goal is to pass all of our testing specs. then the next goal is to take money out of it because it's too good.
have a look at a t53 turbine planetary gear set. they are small and precise but rarely fail with well over 1500hp going through them and taking 25,000 rpms down to 6,000 rpms (rough #'s)...actually that bell gear there has had some issues with resonance frequency failures.
