Time will tell; unfortunetly I don't have a dyno so I have to judge my results by top speed and rpm. In the meantime, I'm content with 69.9 mph gps. Even with 3 people and 1/2 tank full I can still run+68. Thanks.
Yes we were. The difference was only about 15 hp and on the water , it would be hard to tell either way

I'm getting close to answering this question for you guys. With a little more prop tweaking, I'll get there.

I've upgraded to a 615HP 454MAG bored 0.060 built by White Performance in TN. So far I've hit 71 on GPS with 3 people and about 40 gallons of fuel in about 2 feet of chop. I've been running a non-labbed 27P Mirage Plus at 5000RPM WOT. Max HP on the dyno was at 5700. I'm going to try a Hydromotive Q-IV 24P to get closer to the 5700RPM and to pull the stern out of the water to reduce drag. Another option is labbing the 27P Mirage Plus or trying a friend's labbed 25P. One of these combo's will get me there with driver only, light fuel, and a foot of chop.

We had an '86 with twins-355's. After break-in and final tuning to both timing and carbs the boat ran 74 on a handheld GPS with a load of two adults/half fuel.
Oddly enough, the boat ran best with lab-finished and tweaked Merc cleavers- I had tried just about every prop combo before settling on those. I had to drive through some porpoising tendencies in the low 60mph range, and since it didn't have counter-rotating drives it started getting to be a little bit of a handful at WOT, but was still pretty darn stable and a blast to drive.
Steering upgrades are an ABSOLUTE MUST! I was always curious after building those engines how that boat would have responded without that huge hook in the hull. I should have kept it- GREAT BOAT!!

Will it take the speed ? maybe . Was it designed for that? No.
If you are determined Formula Outlaw is right, steering and tabs. The hook is there like built in tabs. It probably helped the twins a lot but not much help for single engine. HTRDLNCN is right about the hook its easy speed. If you don't remove it its like running with your park brake on. Tabs will help with control. Good luck and hang on. Just something to keep in mind a 27 Fountain would probably go near a 100 with that kind of power.

Hello, I'm a new member, and am curious about the most powerful engine one has ever put into a 242 LS? I have seen some posts with 540's with 535HP, but has anyone ever put in say a 588 with 700HP or a blown 588 with say 900/1000HP? If so, what other mods have been done to the boat (Drives and srivetrain)..

Has anyone run Arnesons on a 242 LS? ASD6 or ASD8...?
