292 Fastech Performance
Have been reading a lot of threads about the 292 with 6.2s. Seems like 70 mph is pretty standards. One thing I keep hearing is that they're slow to plane. How bad is this? How much is it affected by the # of people in the boat. Has anyone tried any prop work to improve the planing time? We've got a lot of idle zones around here and it would drive me crazy to have something that was a complete dog out of the hole.

Having recently purchased a 2002 292,I had to learn how to get the boat on plane. What I found was to punch it hard, full throttle, than it will plane. At that point, you can back it off and maintain plane at about 3K RPM's.
Maintaining plane below 3K is a challenge also. The boat is not made to plane below approx 35-40 mph.
If other 292 owners have any better ideas, chime in.

App 4 seconds of down tabs(no gauge) app 3/4 throttle and as soon as it breaks over, back off the throttles and lift the tabs back to neutral position. At least thats what worked for me in my 02 292 with 350 mpi's and 28 pitch props, boat ran an honest 70 on gps with 2 people and 1/2 tank of gas.

Re: 292 Fastech Performance
Tabs are a big help to getting on plane for me - I'll put them at 5 on the indicators and then throttle to about 3/4, working the throttles to avoid too much slip (which will happen if you go full-throttle out of the hole).
I just saw 72 mph (GPS) this weekend with stock 6.2s, 1.65 drive ratio, 28p Bravo props. This is up from 71 mph with the S/T box, which I removed a week ago. I suspect the weight reduction over the drives it what gave me the extra MPH.
I wouldn't classify the 292 as being difficult to get on plane, just takes a little practice to do it quickly.

Tabs all the way down drives in, 1/2 throttle till she starts to move then WOT if props slip you went WOT to soon.As soon as it comes on plane bring drives to neutral (as all stepped hulls should be run) this is putting the drives exactly vertical 90 deg to the theoretical line from the bottom of the front step to the transom.and then bring tabs up as per water conditions
The 292s have a LOT of bow rise coming out of the hole especially with six people on board you actually cant see in front of you till it planes off.I have found that if you keep the water tank full it helps a little.
Its a great starter performance boat had a lot of fun last summer.and they are not bad on fuel
