Powerboat P1 Sails Away with Volvo Race Director
POWERBOAT P1 APPOINTS ANDY HINDLEY
RACE AND TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Powerboat P1 Management Ltd. has further strengthened its management team with the appointment of Andy Hindley as Race and Technical Director. Currently Racing Director of the Volvo Ocean Race, one of sailing’s most prestigious global events, Hindley will assume his new position in March; he will be responsible for the operations of Powerboat P1’s World Championship race circuit, with 14 Grand Prix races in seven international countries.
“Hindley’s appointment is another clear message that Powerboat P1 is prepared to invest in the high caliber of personnel necessary to continue to grow our Grand Prix Championship series as a dynamic sports and entertainment platform,” explains Jim O’Toole, Managing Director of P1 Management Ltd. “He will add a new dimension to event operations for teams, venues and technical partners and his experience will be invaluable as Powerboat P1 gears up for another season of world class competition.”
“The growth of P1 from a standing-start in 2003 has been dramatic,” comments Hindley, “I have watched its development with interest and am very enthused to be joining the management team at such an exciting time. I look forward to contributing to P1’s further brand development as a truly global series and an in-demand property.”
A graduate in Physics and Electronics, Hindley skippered the yacht ‘Save the Children’ to third place in the1996-97 BT Global Challenge before joining the Volvo Ocean Race. In his director’s role, he managed every aspect of the Volvo’s race operations, including handling of syndicate and athlete contracts, team interaction, host venues, on board media and television production.
“We are very proud that our colleague, Andy Hindley, has been appointed to this exciting and demanding role,” said Jeremy Troughton, Operations Director for the Volvo Ocean Race, “He has worked with the Volvo Ocean Race as Racing Director for seven years and this is an opportunity for him to use his considerable skills to great effect in a different arena. We are extremely sorry to say goodbye to him after such an enjoyable and productive period, but we of course wish him well in his new job and we will be following the P1 Powerboat circuit with great interest.”
Powerboat P1 will begin its seven-country tour in Italy in May, wrapping up its Grand Prix series with a World Championship in the Middle East in October.
