Offshore Super Series Powerboat Racing Association (OSS) Establishes Race Control
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Wednesday, March 10, 2004
The Offshore Super Series Powerboat Racing Association (OSS) names Ray Standley as Director of Race Control for select race sites. Standley will oversee and manage turn boats plus patrol and medical boats on the race course.
“I have worked with Ray for many years as Race Control, and I know him personally,” said Mike Tomlinson, OSS Chief Referee. “Ray has always done an outstanding job, and he is the best choice for the position.”
Standley began racing in 1962 and has been involved in many different race classes, among them APBA’s SK (Ski Racing), SS (Super Stock), GN (Grand Nationals) divisions. In 1969, he was Highpoint Champion. Standley was on the team with astronauts Gordon Cooper and the late Gus Grissom in the GN Racing series, and later he drove for Texas Oilfield legend Red Adair in the GN Racing division.
Retiring from active racing as a driver in 1982, Standley continued in high performance boating as Vice President of TOPPS, a Houston-based boat racing club that has assisted with the race production of both Corpus Christi and Galveston offshore races. Standley has been Race Control in Corpus Christi for 6 of the 8 years the race has been run.
“Race Control is a highly stressful job controlling the safety of the racers through the disbursement of patrol and medical boats,” said Elaine Motl, CEO of OSS. “Ray’s even-tempered and focused personality makes him the perfect candidate.”
Standley has long been a proponent of Race Control being a permanent position of
the race management team. Through time the assembling, educating and controlling
of many race site volunteers has become more complex. With his many years of experience, he will make this a better part of race management, and with this will come a higher level of safety for the drivers and spectators.
“I am very excited about joining OSS as Race Control,” Standley said. “The reason I do it is to stay in close contact with the racers and producers I’ve come to know and to participate in a critical role that is crucial to the safety of everyone while we enjoy the races as well as the gorgeous city shores.”
OSS is a not for profit organization dedicated to the further development and growth of offshore powerboat racing in North America. For more information, check out: www.offshoresuperseries.com.
