I went along on a boat that was part of a group going to the Lake Charles casinos a few years ago. Pulled into a gas dock on the intra-coastal to top off the tanks. I went to pay for the gas after the dock-hand had finished and was pleasantly surprised by how small the bill was., about $200 I think. The skipper had wanted to pay the bill and if he had, he might have realized that it wasn't enough. The dock hand had filled the starboard tank and then filled the freshwater tank on the port side with gas.

We found out an hour later when we stopped for a quick swim, one of the girls pulled out the shower head on the transom to rinse her hair and got a gas shower. This boat had two icemakers, hot water heaters, dishwasher and various other appliances. I was never so glad to get off a boat. The owner ended up replacing the water tank and most of the appliances on the insurance.

Marina claimed fill cap was open and hanging down, claimed it was Captains or designated crewman's responsibility to oversee re-fueling. I will say the water and fuel fills were the same size, a foot apart, both chrome and only labeled on the caps. I dont know if the insurance eventually collected from the marina.

It happens I guess. I had a friend fill another friends holding tank thinking it was a water tank. Thankfully boat owner stopped him before it overflowed. That would have been a sh*tty mess

I have a 19' RIB and the fuel fill is under the front seat and the fresh water fill that looks like a fuel fill is visible behind the rear seat. I bought a locking cap for the water fill so no mistake is made when I'm not there.
