Default Exhaust flappers/reversion

I am waiting on my tailpipes to finish my boat, hopefully they are here in time to get it running for the 4th of july.My question is i am using stainless marine hi torque 3 exhaust and when i ordered the tailpipes they recommended 5" diameter. I haven't ordered mufflers yet,i am waiting to see how loud it really is and am going to try to make some turndowns like troutly was posting last year(snufflers). These tailpipes don't have any kind of external or internal flappers, will i be able to run it without water splashing up pipe while sitting, does anyone make 5"flappers,will mufflers or turndowns prevent water from ingesting backwards up pipes? The boat is a 272 baja and the stock tips would bounce in and out of the water while sitting but aren't submerged constantly. Any insight or suggestions? I'm thinking of ordering the GGB mufflers, will that help stop water ingestion? I asked stainless about mufflers and they said they are not in the muffler business,Smitty

The GGB Extreme Clamp-on mufflers come with a built -in water reversion flap. Must be a bit of motor to go with 5" exhaust?

Its only a 540 but it is blown. The tails start out as 5 inch and have to be reduced to 4 1/2 then 4 anyways if you want them to go thru transom in stock holes,i couldn't see bottle necking it down like that. Graham,do you have 5" clampons in stock? Smitty

Graham,

Just checking but did you get my clamp on Extreme's with the flats for a Fountain with 1-1/2" clearance done this week?

Thanks for all the help.

I thought the ggb's had the lowest power drop(were basically straight thru),the pic makes it look like they are only 2 1/2-3 inches in dia internally? Smitty

I am using the imco power flow plus exhaust with the custom pipes and tried putting the mercury rubber flaps on, they fit perfectly into the pipe and were held with a couple of pop rivets but they kept tearing. I then ordered a pair of drews shot gun mufflers and they fit perfectly into the inside of the imco exhaust. I am not sure how large the pipes are on my boat but I think they could be in the 5 inch range (boat is not here). They are a spring loaded flap and they sure made my boat a lot quieter while docking and just ideling on the lake, they are also said to prevent reversion. hope this helps

Are the drew shot gun mufflers built with a spring loaded flap or the mercury rubber flaps that kept on tearing?
