454 to 496-is it worth it???
i just blew one of my 454"s, i have an extra block but no cranks, so i would have to purchase one, is it worth it to put a 496 rotating assy in, scat sells them for around 750, or am i better off buying just a 454 crank and keeping it the same, what would the gains be????

Re: 454 to 496-is it worth it???
imo,if your looking for horsepower"there's no replacement for displacement".
ex.-350 chevy cam 280 dur,.500 lift =noticable idle lope
-454 chevy cam 280 dur,.500 lift=alot less lope but more hp.
496 vs 454-same cams,496 will idle alittle better(more user friendly)but SHOULD make more power.
but there are other things to consider-ie 496 vs 489=.060 overbore vs .030 overbore.
thinner walls could run hotter.
what to do at rebuild time(rebore)?
just alittle to think about

You'll see 20-25 horsepower difference between similarly outfitted 454 and 482 (std bore x 4.25 crank), assuming you are running rect port heads and GM aluminum intake. If you are running peanut port ovals and iron intake, you will net maybe 15-18 hp.
Dunno which blocks you are running, and dunno if you can bore more than 060 over. If you run a stroker, you are going to be purchasing pistons, anyhow, so you oughta figure on boring and honing w a torque plate at least 030.
Stock stroke cranks are a lot cheaper (in 0/10 regrinds) so you have to look at what pieces you are starting with, what your budget is, and what your goals are.

Re: 454 to 496-is it worth it???
i am using 049 heads w/ small valves, performer intakes and stainless marine exhaust, what would the rpm gains be?? would it be enough to warrant a prop change???
