Default Carb problem or exhaust leak?

I need help badly. Here is the low down: (sorry for the length)

New 572 with an Barry Grant king demon carb. Not too sure of the specifics as I don't have all the paperwork in front of me. Got the motor tuned and running well. Took it out to break it in and it ran fine except a little cough during accel and decel. After about 3-4 hours of runing around I was headed up river and it popped under load one time. I now have exhaust leaks from the headers the boat shop forgot the circular gaskests on them. The the charging system was screwed. I wasn't paying attention to my guage and it turns out that the alternator was hooked up backwards. So new MSD installed new alternator (hooked up correctly) it starts up and idles fine. Still looking into new gaskets for the CMI headers. Went to the lake and tried to pull out of the no wake zone and is just backfires through the carb (lean) and it takes a bit to plane out once it is on plane it runs fine. Is the exhaust leak causing all my problems or is there something else going on? Thanks in advance.

I just had the same problem with a new Barry Grant.
The accelerator pump on the secondaries was not squirting.
Adjusted the pump so it gave it a shot of the juice and that fixed my problem. It was check marked it was tested but there is no way it could have worked.
I also went up a size in pump nozzle.

Could one of my cam lobes have gone flat during the break in? I have heard that this can happen but it seems as tough it would run like crapp ALL the time not just under load.

A bad exhaust lobe can be pretty mild at idle but will regularly pop back through the carb at increased rpm and load.
