Merc 496 HO with CMI sport tubes and procharger
HI!
We seriously consider to buy a new Laveycraft EVO 28. Unfortunately the Merc 525 EFI is not approved by EU, and the budget does not allow us to buy the Merc 600 Sci.
A reasonable solution is to buy the Merc 496 HO and add CMI Sport Tubes. This will add approx. 50 hp to a total 474 HP. When the warranty is over (2 years), a Procharger / Whipple charger can be bought to increase the HP further.
My doing so we save approx. USD 35.000 due to certain tax rules in Norway.
Is it possible to combine the CMI Sport Tubes and the Procharger / Whipple chargers? What kind of gain can be expected with this combination?
We will buy the Bravo XR drive from the start, to allow the upgrades later.
Laveycraft states expected speed with a Merc 496 HO to be 78 mph. How fast should another 50 hp and CMI Sport Tubes give us?
Cheeeers! Toffen G

Probably 2-4 mph gain with the exhaust only.
The 496 on the late model ones I would only go Whipple as the procharger leaves a little too much to chance on the later model stuff without doing a lot of work. That said I am still a procharger fan & distributor and they do make sense on a lot of other engines.. I am also doing a Whipple on my 496 in my new Donzi @ our shop. I am also doing other things like building a larger heat exchanger, larger oil coolers & some other stuff to help keep all the stuff as safe as possible. Some food for though the 496 stuff is considered pricey to many, If you cant do the work yourself you may want to consider the 600sci if you can really add it for 35k US.. I hope this helps you.. Im not bashing or trying to detract, but I also believe 78 on a non mag, or even a mag for that matter in a 28' boat is a pipe dream.. I would think 60-68 is more realistic @ best.. You would need to go with some major internal work or an Sc to get the high 70s low 80s.. You may want to drive it before you buy it.. Jamie / Lakeside

Merc 496 HO w/Sport Tubes - EVO 28
Hi!
I also think 78 mph is on the hight side with this power. A Laveycraft 2750 runs 75 mp with a Merc 500 EFi and 80 mph with a Merc 525 EFI. An EVO 28 runs 89-90 mph with a Merc 600 Sci with more to go according to Powerboat Mag. However, the offshore version runs 88 mph with a merc 525 EFI (closed canopy) which is very good indeed (Powerboat test run): .
It now seems to that Merc 525 EFI is possible to import to Norway a noise issues can be solved. I met a guy yesterday with a brand new Nortech 36 Cat with twin 525 EFI's. So I will check this out more in detail.
Cheeers and thanks! Toffen
