Default EVO 28 - Merc 496 HO w/ CMI and Procharger

HI!

We seriously consider to buy a new Laveycraft EVO 28. Unfortunately the Merc 525 EFI is not approved by EU, and the budget does not allow us to buy the Merc 600 Sci.

A reasonable solution is to buy the Merc 496 HO and add CMI Sport Tubes. This will add approx. 50 hp to a total 474 HP. When the warranty is over (2 years), a Procharger / Whipple charger can be bought to increase the HP further.

My doing so we save approx. USD 35.000 due to certain tax rules in Norway.

Is it possible to combine the CMI Sport Tubes and the Procharger / Whipple chargers? What kind of gain can be expected with this combination?

We will buy the Bravo XR drive from the start, to allow the upgrades later.

Laveycraft states expected speed with a Merc 496 HO to be 78 mph. Seems a little high? How fast should another 50 hp and CMI Sport Tubes give us?

Cheeeers! Toffen G

I think the CMI's are great headers, just think the 50HP is a bit on the high side.

If you have not done so already, look into Raylar, which could take your 496HO up to 600HP. I have a pair of them in my boat and they run fantastic and you keep all of your stock Merc guardian system and electronics.

Blaniac is right. Contrary to all the hype, you won't get 50 hp just by bolting those onto a stock 496. I would also recommend checking with Raylar, or taking out the 496, and putting in a 502.

The Evo is a nice looking boat BTW.

This just in...Kevin Cooper at Laveycraft corrected me with the following information on the Evo.

The 28 EVO has different bottom than the 2750, and Kevin says with a 496 HO it ran 80MPH in their tests. There was a test in Powerboat with the 2750, but that bottom has also been changed, so the original speed of 71 mph is now up to 74-75mph with a 496 HO (Open Bow, now sure what it is with Closed Bow), while the 525 runs 82-83. The EVO line weighs less the 2750 line and has a more efficient deck. The EVO uses the same bottom and deck as the race boat. The race boat runs 93mph with a 525 and a Bravo drive.

yes the cmi will work with the blowers but, since you are way over on the otherside of the pond I would go with stainless marine over cmi withe new 3rd gen set up the hp will be within a couple hp. I have owned my stainless marine exhaust which is the dry set up loud they have wet and long wet which you should use. for 13years and still going running strong. I am in saltwater only, I just flush them and thats it a lot of race teams use there 5'' round set ups and the guys that win you can PM me if I can help you out.the motors I have run with the S/ M are 502 with 585hp, 502 595hp 509 647hp 509 670hp which is in it now. also a IMCO lower drive case 2'' shortie worked well for me, you might pick up some speed having your xr lower case changed to a stock or 1'' shorter case at the factory and get the polished one it nice. I have had both now. also BBLADDES PROPS does nice work get your prop labbed from them laveycraft should be able to do all this for you since they are a custom shop and stick with a 4 blade not as hard on the drive . see yah art

496 HO @ 78 mph is not unreasonable at all for that boat. My 2750 (which has the same bottom as the EVO) with (2) 15" subs, full under-deck w/ galley and DVD player and monitors ran 70 mph before we changed out the motor. With a light lay-up and minimal weight in the boat, plus the CMI's ... Well, should be sweet!
