Question hydrohoist lift question

My question is how much can you go over on the # rating for one of these lifts. There is a guy that is selling a 4 year old 4000# lift for a $1000. My boat weighes 3900#'s dry and has 70gal tank. He said he had a 23' Mirage stored on it that weighed 3990#'s dry with a 60gal tank.

I'm figuring with a full tank of gas and gear that would put me at about 300 to 400#'s over the rating for this lift.

He's hard up for money and that is the cheapest one I've found around Dallas. Plus the lift is already in the slip I would need on Texoma so I wouldn't need to pay to have it installed(they want $600 to install)

Has anyone else stored there boat on a lift that went over on the # rating. And how did it do?

I've seen it done and it was almost a disaster. I'm thinking it was more like a couple thousand over. My gut feeling on this is that it would work fine. I would get the boat over to the lift and try it out first. If you have never used one before remember to fill the front first then bring it up level with the back. I also have installed a couple and moved them around no big deal. If you need mounting or hardware advise I can get you the Reps #.

That close you should be fine drive your boat over and lift it up to see put three or four people in the boat after you lift it to see if it makes much diffrence. If ti goes down a lot it is marginal wont bother the lift much but a very small air leak and your boat will drop so always tie the boat off. A ball valve on the air tank will help prevent air leaks.

As with all factory spec limitations, there's a built in safety buffer which can be anywhere from 5-15%......

In past experience in this matter, I would recommend a third tank be installed if it is even close to marginal. If that lift does not expose at least 1/3 of the tank under full load, it is not safe. Remember, in rough or wind blown water air can escape from the tanks & the lift can sink....maybe front down & back up-very bad news!! If this is a "level lift" model, the risk is not as high of that happening (nearly impossible)...
If it is an "A" model (not level lift model) keep looking for another lift. The "A" model per Hydrohoist is only worth about $350-600 dollars. I own both types & only recommend the level lift model.

The lift is a level lift. I went up the other day and looked at the lift. His boat is still on it. There is over a 1/3 of the barrel sticking out of the water with his boat on it. The slip is back in a cove so I won't have to worry about ruff water. I looked at all the specs for his boat and his does weigh more than mine. Guess the only thing I need to do now is try it.

Thanks for the help
