Carb&exhaust
I just built a 540 out of my old 502 and for lack of knowing
what size carb to put on i used the old WEBER that was on
the motor,i have no idea what size it is but i think the new motor
would want something bigger, any ideas on what size the stock
weber is on a stock 1992 502.Also just how bad do you think the
stock exhaust is hurting my power output. Some of the motor
spec's are Comp cam lift intake 547 exh. 547 dur. @.050
int. 230 exh. 236 lobe sep. 112. Merlin heads, 9.3 comp.
Stock intake.(what is a good intake to run).Started the motor with
2 deg timing any idea how much i would pick up bumping the timing up to the stock 8 deg. Ran it at 2 deg because boat was laid up with a full tank of gas and i wanted to run the old gas threw the motor with lower timing.Any help in any area would be great.

Your cam is too small for 540 cubes. The stock intake will not flow enough and neither will the stock exhaust. Put on a HOLLEY HP 950 with a DART intake and LIGHTNING headers and change the cam. I am running a ULTRADYNE 251-259 at .50 / .601-.625 / 110 deg. and that is on a 510 cube engine with the parts I suggested and I am putting out about 600 HP. GOOD LUCK- Steve

hi kenny,
tinkerboater is right on. if you have the 2-3 k left over after the other engine work, do what he said. if not, here is my .02$. you only went up 38 ci. your motor is pretty mild with cam and compression so here are a couple more options. you could keep your stock weber but at least install a k&n stub stack and k&n air cleaner. that will strighten out your airflow and help your carb flow as much as 20 -30 cfm more than it's rating. re-jet it though.
almost any aftermarket exhaust is better than stock. lightning headers are the way to go and a guy sells them in the classifieds for $1500. replace your stock carb when you can afford to unless you go with headers. then the stock carb should definately go. the stock intake isn't too bad for what you have now but what tinkerboater suggested is better too. (unless you have an alpha)
