Wonder if you could find a something like an AEM dry flo filter that would fit in there. Heck, most of those filters start life as a round one anyways. Just get bent to fit and mesh holds the shape. Could prob get 6" tall while you are at it

Completely unrelated yet related tidbit of information:

Talking about cleaning/oiling/reoiling

In my 2 stroke days we did a lot of flowbench testing using UNI (foam) filters (K&N suck in the desert , they stop large particles, not super fine dust)

We found, much to our surprise when comparing dry vs oiled vs overoiled/saturated filters, was very very little difference in total airflow. A negligible amount actually.

One thing we did find... the filters that clamp right to the mouth of the carb have a very negative effect on performance due to turbulence entering the carb and over the venturies. Adding a 6~9 " velicity tube between the filter and the mouth of the card allowed us to decrease jet sizes by 2 or 3 jets by creating a much more stable airstream over the jet..

Don't be too sure! My buddy has a 2000 502 and he is looking to clone a 500EFI with a little more hp if possible next winter. He just bought a nice set of used SM manifolds, but unfortunately bought the K&N arrestor.

AWESOME thread by the way!!!

Keep in mind this motor was built on a budget with a lot of rhe utilized parts if I was building it to keep I would have bumped the compression up another point and a half bought a nice custom cam from Bob Madera and I believe 550 - 560 horsepower could have been a possibility

Articfriends, I appreciate all of your info on the 502 mpi over the years. Just had my 2001 502 mpi's rebuilt to 540 using a slightly modified mpi intake, TPiS 68 mm throttle body and aluminum heads made 630 hp at 5400 rpms conservative tune and using 89 octane.

Would love to hear more details of this build. What cam, heads, compression, injectors and what was done to the lower would be awesome information. Did you stick with MEFI or did you use Holley or some other aftermarket electronics?

I recently re-dyoed my 8.3-1 540 w tony Mamo afr heads courtesy of Bob Madera on my own dyno WITH no blower, big cam in the 250 at .050 duration range (this is a blower motor) before tearing it apart to use this intake to build my 502 thats in this thread and we made 625 hp w 65 mm tbody and 633 w tpis 68 mm throttle body. We previously made 657 hp on Crocketts dyno with this setup with less head and slightly smaller cam HOWEVER before dynoing this 502 I tested my 10.5 taylor wires that were used on the 540 with a ohmeter and found one at 24,000,000 ohms, one at 3,000,000 ohms, one at 80,000 ohms and the rest between 600 to 2000 depending on the length. When I am completely done dynoing this I am going to install those wires on thois 502 and see what happens to the hp. When I dynoed the 540 with them un-knowing of the terrible condition of those wires it did NOT seem to misfire and plugs looked ok but it DID load up after making dyno pulls. I will be posting a spark plug wire dyno test in near future with what I find there because I DO feel I was missing some hp, fwiw, nice build on your 540 BTW, Smitty

Continued my dyno testing 2 days ago, made baseline pull, motor made 536 hp for my baseline pull, bolted on just the adapter for the "rex marine" flame arrestor, now i was previously referring to this as the AZSM as the guy I borrowed it from bought it from AZSM about 10 years ago (they used to sell it but no longer do) (hardin, rex marine etc still do) and it made WORSE hp without the KN element and drove map table from the 100 map table (was seeing 98.5 map) down to the 90 map table (with JUST adapter it causes so much restriction we saw 91.5 map on scanner pro/mefiburn in real time above 4500 rpms) . This leaned motor out so bad hp dropped to 485 and tq dropped 40+ ft lbs, a 51hp drop. I re-wrote the fuel tables in the 90 map area to get afrs back to where it made peak power, with same afrs on tq peak the tq was down 20 ft lbs or so, was getting the hp peak afrs close and got hp up to 505 and at that point the tach signal generator for the depac started faltering and had to end dynoing until I get a new one. So, the BIG restriction with this flame arrestor appears to be more in the adapter than the area of the element. I was REALLY trying to wring out as much hp with just adapter on because I recently bought a hp 500 intake for my NEXT project and the hp 500 kn element is 30% smaller than the hp killing one that goes with this adapter and I can use it to mount the hp 500 kn on and see how bad IT is. The test however will probably NOT be valid since the adapter is already causing so much restriction. I will probably build;d a temporary sheet metal cone to mount it for testing, I will post results when dyno is back up and running, Smitty
