Mercruiser Oil Filter trouble
Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster.
Bought my Fastech 502 MAG MPI at the beginning of the season here in Michigan, auction, sight unseen. Everything has checked out good except the oil temp, thought I had it fixed when I pulled out chunks of a past Impeller from the oil cooler, explained the erratic engine temps as well. Thought all was good....
Last weekend I was up on Higgins, after WOT for over 2 minutes the oil temp would creep up to 250+ and the gaffrig light would come on, slow down and it'd cool down. Engine temp steady at 170... Hmmmm.....
Fast forward to yesterday, determined to figure this out. I rip out the engine oil cooler, look in the oil intake port and FREAK OUT. It looks like piston ring chunks in my cooler. Dig the chunks out turns out to be plastic.... How did plastic get in my oil???? Figured it out when I pull the filter (5 hours old) And the inner cone is PLASTIC!!!!!!
I proceed to cut open my current filter and the filter that I bought the boat with, and no plastic is broke. Now I have no clue how much plastic is in my oil system/ cooler / oil galley????
What is my next step???
I BEG EVERYONE TO RECONSIDER THE $13 OUICKSILVER FILTERS, THINKING OEM IS BEST, IT'S NOT!
I've done my research and with be using the white K&N or a wix xp from now on.
I will post pics of the chunks I found blocking the cooler after I reach my 10 post count lol

The Merc filters are exactly the same as a standard Chevy oil filter,......

Sooo.... What about the plastic chunks? Do I replace the cooler? Keep running it? How far did they get and what else are they blocking?
Oil pressure was great, wonder if the bypass opened and only a small fractionof my oil was actually getting filtered and cooled....

I would flush the lines and cooler, change the oil and go boating. If the plastic made it past and into the bearings there nothing can be done without a rebuild.
The thing is the plastic melted with the oil getting to hot (250+), so what caused the oil to get that hot? Maybe need new cooler. How is your raw water pump doing, have a pressure gauge on the water jacket?

Spacing between the tubes on the cooler is about 0.050" so they can be an excellent unfortunate filter.
Sorry.
Sorry.

Wix or Napa Gold ( which is Wix )
Dont bother to use the Wix XP , the offer no advantage to us
powerboat guys that change oil , more than our underwear.
The Xp works well in a long interval Synthetic oil change situation.
