Default 502 total advance timing???

I have cig with 502, 10 to 1 comp., 650 lift cam, aluminum heads, stellings headers. What should the total advance be set at. My engine guy has it set at 28. I am running 92 octane gas. Seems like it should be in the 32 range. What do you think.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply it is actually a 751 with 114 sep. maybe a little large but
i love the sound. Engine guy claims mercury set there's at 28. Still seems like
32 would be safe running 92 at 10 to 1. what do you think. thanks again.

Find clean water.
Do a WOT run. Trim to a spot where you can get the boat to plane with tabs and then raise the tabs leaving the drives alone for the whole test. This may not give you your MAX speed, but as long as we are close, it is good enough.

Anyhow, do a WOT run. Note RPM and GPS speed.
Bump timing 2 degrees. Do it again (same direction to rule out wind and current effects). You should see some increase.
Bump 2 more degrees. You should see some increase. (remember, leave the drive trim alone and only use tabs to get on plane).

Keep on until you no longer see an increase. Back down to the last point you saw an increase. This is the max timing for the motor combo, fuel octane, and ambient conditions. Your call as to whether to leave it right there or to back down 2 more for safety.

If you do your first bump and see no increase, then back down 4 and start again. You may already be at your max, although I doubt it.

** what you are doing with this test is using the lake as a dyno - increase to max output peaks, then back up a notch **

Plug checks at each run is recommended, but I know how it burns all the hairs off your arms... Once again, your call on that part.
