I have the same boat with 2005 250XSs .The red line is 6300 on these. .I'm turning a 14 1/2 32 at 6300 and 98mph. Can't get the right combo, can't brake 100mph . 1.62 gears. Are you using jack plates? Do you know what gears you have. I think I'm going to try the plates and then try to pick the right props.
Frank
Frank your slip is way high, who did the props? When the sun and moon lined up, I could turn 14.5X32 at 6400 with a 6 or 7% slip, I see you are still struggling with the perfect set up. Are you keeping the 250’s or are you going to try 300X engines, or 300XS??? I put over 250 hours on that boat, so I know it pretty well. There was quite a bit of set up time done to it at Ocean Outboard. The boat needs adjustable jack plates! When we rigged it, early 1998, Peter felt that with weight of the 300 promax motors the engines should be on the transom. So that is how we did it. On the transom the 1.75 height was as high as we could go. The next hole up would have put the height at 2.50” ad there was no water pressure at that height. With the engines on jack plates, the added set back would make the starting point at 2.00” and you can adjust the height in any increment to get the best speed vs. water pres. At 1.75” up,. Spinning 14.5X32 Mercury lab 3 blade cleavers ( Dennis Cavanaugh) spent quite a bit of time fooling with the props, the boat ran a best speed (not a everyday speed) of 112 MPH, with the 300 Promax engines. The everyday speed was in the 105-106 and that is flying the boat pretty high, I think the addition of adjustable plates is the first step, without them you can’t get the perfect height. Have you done the adjustable plates yet? Then the props can be 15” rather then 14.5” I would get together with Brett at B blades, he is the protégé of Dennis Cavanaugh, and is a wealth or knowledge on these props. He keeps it guarded, but he knows what to do. The question is what engines to use? 300X are without the doubt the fastest, most durable (mid section) or do you go to 300XS? Not as fast, or good looking, but about the same speed as the 300 promax ran. Either way, I tried many prop types, engine heights, weight placement, etc. on that boat, and I think it ran great for the size engines it had when I had it. The only thing is the boat really liked to be flown, the speed only was obtainable when it was flown very high,, watch out for big boat wakes.
