I saw this in general also. I had 2 28 A.T.s. I liked the look of the Pantera and know its a great boat BUT the freeboard sucks, I like to be inside the boat. I was real close to buying a Volicty but didn't like the head room in the cabin or how slippry it was at speeds ( PAD) also they had some real problems with them coming apart at one time around here. The A.T. has it all freeboard - cabin - speed and handleing, the boat really acts like a 30 footer.

Griff 10-17-2007 01:13 AM

I had my Pantera for over 5 years and it was a great boat. It was solid and the rigging was exceptional. What cosmic12 said about freeboard is correct. The Pantera is on the shallow side when it comes to freeboard. The cabin is good sized, but most don't have too many frills. Its a wave crushing mutha.

Never been in a 28 AT, but I have been in a 25 and now own a 32. My 32 has TON of freeboard and more than most other performance boats. More than my friends 353 Fastec and more than a 38 Top Gun. The 25 I was in was very deep also and deeper than my Pantera.

I crawled around a Velocity at a boat show and was not impressed. I wouldn't even go there.

You can't go wrong with a 28 AT or 28 Pantera. It will just depend on what you want, and in your case I'm sure, how good a deal you can get.

The 28AT is mine, you are local also so you know pro-roc. Those three types of boats were in my final choice. Rolf had a 28 pantera and 28 velocity for sale wound up with AT. All three are nice, my brother has a 24 pantera does not use much with a 30 spectre recently bought but the pantera is a great boat not a big fan of the velocity though. I went with the AT because it is a bigger feelling boat and just liked the look. The AT is powered with a single 525 and there are none in this area, great boat for the bay and ocean. Best of all I have the only one around here. Vic

berns29scarab 10-17-2007 11:25 AM

i'm very famimliar with Rolf and Francine over at Pro-Roc...purchased my 30 Spectre from them. Also looked at the 28 Pantera they had but got a steal of a deal on a 353 Fastec at the time so purchased that. I hooked OSO Member moviemoney up with the 28 that pro-roc had and that now in CA...he loves it. Your boat is gorgeous but a lil outta my range $$ wise

I think the freeboard is all relative. More freeboard will make you feel a little safer, but the AT cockpit is smaller than the pantera. Also on hot TX days - I prefer less freeboard. I've never been in a 28 AT, but I have been in a 32 fountain that had a lot more freeboard then the 28 Pantera. The only thing I could see were the bolsters. When I sat in the back seat of the pantera you can see everything and you don't need to stand up to enjoy the water. From a back seat passengers perspective - less freeboard is a more enjoyable ride because you can see whats going on.

Its all personal preference, and who buys a boat for the backseat passengers enjoyment anyways? Their just happy-go-lucky to be there and chip in for gas. :D :D

I did a short local poker run in the backseat of a 33 Outlaw. As you know, the cockpit of that boat is big enough to hold a small party. However, the freeboard is so shallow that I could get my hand wet by hanging it over the side while sitting in the backseat. I did not find this as secure as a deep freeboard boat; and would have much rather had more boat around me. I am not complaining; its a great boat owned by a friend, and the cockpit room is spectacular. Again, its all personal preference.

Bern....28 AT is the only choice. Not bashing other boats, they all have their good and bad points but the AT will out perform the other choices.

Well, the fuel consumption can't be beat: two 50 gallon tanks will get you 220 miles running mostly WOT. I did the Jammin on the James run and back to starting launch sunday w/o getting any fuel; 1/4 tank left-aprox. 200 miles. If you have access to a cd from that run we are @ 1hour 11 mins into it; some decent footage of us running 60mph or so. The boat will go 71-72mph @ 4900rpm's spinning 26.5 labbed Hydromotive 4-blades. Balance is fine now; there is a keel plane and 1-1/2"drive spacers to improve ride and reduce porpoise. The previous owner added both, & blue printed the bottom, and said that the boat needed the "acccessories" due to handling isssues. Originally the props were turning in, no drive spacers or plane and it went 64mph with some porpoising issues. The ride is fantastic now and I can tell you that in 3-4' snot, no other boat under 30' will ride better.
Of course, I would love to run upper 70's -80, but maybe that will come. I almost sold this boat last month, man I'm so glad I still have her.

You must have some pretty long arms, :D , thats a 6' adult in the back sittn and teenager standing, how did Baja get mixed up in this ? I agree though, didnt buy the boat for the riders comfort, but in the rough stuff the ride is much smoother in the backseat, with the stereo blasting they lose their hearing back there anyway. :musik010:

Heck, we hung dry-wall together!

I don't think you can go wrong with the Pantera or AT. Both are great rough water boats. The AT has a deeper cockpit/more freeboard and nice cabin. The Pantera has a bigger cockpit and the twin BBC option!

All I have to say is Mike let me drive his 28 with a single 496 back before he upgraded to his 37 and that 28 was one of the most fun boats I have ever driven it turns like an F1 race car. Just get someone to take you for a ride I am sure you will like it.

That is one thing I forget to mention about this boat..I have gotten so used to it. You can turn as sharp as you want, but HANG ON!!.. or you will eject passengers; this thing is on rails! I have never experienced a feeling like that...the strakes on on Active Thunder are unlike any I have seen; very sharp.

Only problem......Pat said he would never make another 28 twin & I believe ther are only 2 in existence; and we ain't sellin!
